Chapter 7 - DIANE'S CONFESSION
Diane was arrested before sunrise.
The video did not prove she ordered murder, but it proved conspiracy, fraud, and knowledge of Arthur's plan to sabotage Jonathan's car. Prosecutors believed the threat of a life sentence would force her to cooperate.
Diane asked to speak with Annabelle.
Thomas advised against it.
Eleanor said the decision belonged to Annabelle.
They met in a secure interview room. Diane wore a plain gray detention uniform. Without the emerald dress, diamonds, and perfect makeup, she looked smaller but not softer.
Annabelle sat across from her.
"You called me an orphan as though you had nothing to do with it."
Diane's mouth tightened. "I did not order their deaths."
"You ordered everything that led to them."
"Your father would have destroyed the company."
"By exposing theft?"
"By exposing weakness. Investors would have fled. Thousands of employees could have lost their jobs."
Annabelle recognized the logic of people who rename greed as sacrifice.
"So you stole the pension fund to save the employees?"
Diane looked away.
"Daniel was drowning in debt. I thought we could replace the money before anyone knew."
"And when my father knew?"
"I wanted him gone from the company. Arthur promised the car would break down before the bridge. He said Jonathan would be frightened into silence."
"Why trust Arthur?"
Diane laughed bitterly. "Because Charles trusted him. Because Eleanor trusted him. Because everyone did."
She leaned forward.
"Arthur did not disappear after the crash. He stayed because he wanted Annabelle Mercer alive."
Annabelle's skin chilled.
"Why?"
"Your father's shares were placed in trust until you turned twenty-five. If you died before then without signing control to another Mercer, the shares returned to Eleanor and then passed according to Charles's will. Arthur could not control that. He needed you alive, isolated, and ashamed enough to surrender your inheritance voluntarily."
Annabelle would turn twenty-five in eleven days.
The restaurant humiliation had not been random. Diane had planned to force Annabelle into a public confrontation, then use the scene as evidence she was unstable and unfit to manage the company.
"The bill?" Annabelle asked.
"A test."
"The slap?"
For the first time, Diane showed something like regret.
"I lost control."
"No. You revealed it."
Diane closed her eyes.
She gave prosecutors the address of a private archive Arthur maintained beneath an old Mercer warehouse.
Police found financial ledgers, forged wills, surveillance photographs, and files on every member of the family.
Annabelle's file contained school reports, medical records, photographs of her apartment, and notes about her personality.
One page was titled FINAL TRANSFER.
It described a plan scheduled for her twenty-fifth birthday.
Arthur intended to force her to sign away the shares.
At the bottom, in red ink, he had written:

If she refuses, use the river road.
