Chapter 6 - MARTIN KESSLER

Martin Kessler contacted Annabelle directly the next afternoon.
The call came while she was standing inside her small photo-restoration studio, looking at an unfinished portrait of her parents.
"You have Rebecca's eyes," he said.
Annabelle gripped the phone. "Where are you?"
"Close enough to see the black jacket you keep wearing like armor."
She turned toward the street. Cars moved past the glass storefront. No one appeared to be watching.
"Why did you frame my father?"
Kessler laughed without humor. "Because Diane paid me. Because Daniel threatened me. Because Arthur told me your grandfather would protect the company before he protected his son. We were all cowards in expensive rooms."
"Did you cut the brakes?"
Silence.
"Meet me," he said. "Come alone if you want the truth."
He directed her to the closed Mercer Grand Hotel, a historic property undergoing renovation. Annabelle knew going alone was reckless. She also knew Kessler would disappear if police arrived first.
She called Thomas, kept the line open in her pocket, and entered through a side door.
Dust hung in the lobby. Furniture was covered in sheets. At the top of the grand staircase, Martin Kessler waited in an old brown coat.
He was thinner than the photograph, his face marked by years of fear.
"You look like your mother," he said.
Annabelle stayed near the door. "Tell me what happened."
Kessler held up a flash drive.
"Diane ordered the pension theft. Daniel helped. Arthur created the documents. I moved the money. Jonathan discovered it before we were ready."
"And the crash?"
"Arthur cut the brake line."
The answer struck harder than Diane's slap.
"On whose order?"
"Diane wanted Jonathan frightened, not killed. Arthur told her the brakes would fail after they reached the highway and that Jonathan would pull over. He lied."
"Why?"
Kessler looked around the abandoned hotel. "Because Arthur believed the Mercer family was weak. He wanted control of the company through people he could manipulate. Daniel was greedy. Diane was cruel. Charles was old. Your father was the only one Arthur could not own."
A sound came from the balcony above.
Kessler's face changed.
"You were followed."
A gunshot shattered the marble beside Annabelle.
Kessler pulled her behind a pillar. Another shot struck the staircase railing.
Thomas's voice shouted from Annabelle's pocket as police converged outside.
Kessler pushed the flash drive into her hand.
"Run through the kitchen."
"Come with me."
"I spent seventeen years running."
He stepped into the open and shouted toward the shooter.
The next shot struck him in the chest.
Annabelle screamed, but Kessler remained upright long enough to point toward the upper balcony.
Police stormed the hotel.
The shooter escaped through a service elevator, leaving behind a rifle and a single black glove.
Kessler died before the ambulance arrived.
On the flash drive was a video recorded the night before her parents' deaths.
Arthur Bell sat at a desk, testing a small cutting tool.
Across from him, Diane said, "I only want Jonathan scared."
Arthur smiled.
