Chapter 1 - The DNA Report Is Back

Grant pulled Elena’s wheelchair away just as her fingers touched the armrest.
The wheels scraped across the wet hospital floor.
Sharp.
Ugly.
Deliberate.
Elena’s hand closed on empty air.
Her body dropped sideways.
Her forearm hit the reflective tile first, then her hip, then the rest of her collapsed with a breathless cry she tried to swallow before it became a scream.
The private hospital room glowed with dying sunset.
Orange light through the blinds.
Cold blue shadows under the bed.
The heart monitor pulsing softly behind her.
An IV stand near the window.
The empty wheelchair now three feet farther away, its wheels still trembling from the force of Grant’s hand.
Grant stood over her in dark clothes, polished shoes planted beside the nurse-call cable.
He looked down at his wife.
No panic.
No guilt.
No rush to help.
Only irritation.
“You fell,” he said coldly. “Learn to live with it.”
Elena pressed one palm against the floor and tried to push herself up.
Her arms shook.
Her breath came in short, painful bursts.
Her lower body did not answer.
It had not answered since the night Grant said she slipped on the stairs.
Grant watched her struggle, then placed his shoe over the nurse-call remote cable and dragged it farther away from her hand.
The remote scraped softly across the tile.
Just out of reach.
Elena lifted her bruised face toward him.
Tears filled her eyes.
But beneath them, something else was awake now.
Rage.
“You checked for witnesses first,” she whispered.
Grant’s jaw tightened.
Then he crouched.
Not quickly enough to look panicked.
Not slowly enough to look gentle.
He gripped her beneath the chin and forced her face up toward his.
His thumb pressed into the bruise near her jaw.
“You can’t even stand,” he said. “Who’ll believe you?”
The monitor continued its steady pulse.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Elena did not lower her eyes.
Her uninjured hand slid slowly beneath the hospital bed.
Her fingers found the phone where she had hidden it fifteen minutes earlier.
Already recording.
She closed her hand around it.
Grant did not notice.
He was too busy believing helplessness meant silence.
Elena’s voice became quiet.
Almost calm.
“My body remembers your hands.”
For the first time, Grant’s expression flickered.
Only slightly.
But she saw it.
Then the hospital room door swung open.
Dr. Rachel Cole stepped inside wearing navy scrubs beneath a white coat, dark hair tied back, a thick sealed laboratory envelope in her hand.
She stopped.
Her eyes moved from Elena on the floor to the empty wheelchair, then to Grant crouched over her.
Grant released Elena instantly and stood too fast.
“Doctor,” he said.
Rachel did not answer him.
Her gaze dropped to the nurse-call remote dragged near his shoe.
Then to Elena’s hidden hand beneath the bed.
Then back to Grant.
She lifted the sealed envelope.
Her voice was cold.
Deliberate.
“Grant… the DNA report is back.”
All the color left his face.
Elena lay on the floor, breathing hard, pain burning through her hip and forearm.
But she was not afraid now.
Not like before.
May you like
Because Grant was finally looking at the one thing he could not shove out of reach.
Evidence.
