Chapter 10 - Nobody Moves the Chair Away From You

And it was Elena, years later, rolling through a new rehabilitation suite at Vale NeuroSystems while a young patient tested a transfer chair designed from the memory of that terrible room.
The patient was twenty-six, newly injured, angry at everyone, especially herself.
She missed the chair on the first try and cursed loudly.
The nurse flinched.
Elena smiled.
“Good.”
The young woman glared.
“Good?”
“Anger means you’re still in the room.”
The woman blinked.
Elena moved closer.
“When you’re ready, we try again. When you’re not, we wait. Either way, nobody moves the chair away from you.”
The young woman looked at her for a long moment.
Then down at the wheels.
“Someone did that to you?”
Elena touched the rim of her own chair.
“Yes.”
“Did you get past it?”
Elena looked toward the window where sunset warmed the glass.
Past it?
No.
Some things do not become past.
They become part of the map.
“I got through it,” she said. “And then I redesigned the room.”
The young woman nodded slowly.
Outside, the evening light shifted from orange to blue.
Inside, the floor was dry.

The call button was within reach.
The chair stayed where Elena placed it.
