Chapter 2 - Did Someone Push You?

The fall that broke Elena Vale’s spine happened nine days earlier.

At least, that was what the hospital chart said.

Fall at home.

Unwitnessed.

Patient reports dizziness.

Husband found her at base of stairs.

That was Grant’s version.

The first version.

The one he delivered calmly to paramedics while Elena drifted in and out of consciousness on the marble floor of their townhouse.

He knelt beside her then too.

One hand on her shoulder.

The other holding her phone.

Not giving it to her.

Holding it away.

“She fell,” he told the paramedics. “She’s been weak lately. She fainted.”

Elena tried to speak.

Her mouth would not cooperate.

Pain had split the room into pieces.

Ceiling light.

Grant’s voice.

A paramedic asking her name.

Her own fingers clawing at the floor.

Grant leaning close while the paramedics lifted the stretcher.

“You fell,” he whispered into her hair. “Remember that.”

Then darkness took her.

When she woke in the hospital, her legs felt like someone else’s rumor.

Present.

Attached.

Silent.

Dr. Rachel Cole was the first person who did not accept Grant’s story too quickly.

She examined the bruises.

Elena’s shoulder.

Her jaw.

Her forearm.

Four pressure marks around one wrist.

Not from a fall.

From a hand.

Rachel asked Grant to wait outside.

He smiled.

“My wife gets confused when she’s medicated.”

Rachel looked at him.

“I asked you to wait outside.”

Something in her tone made him obey.

Once the door closed, Rachel sat beside Elena’s bed.

No clipboard in front of her.

No rushed sympathy.

Just eye contact.

“Elena,” she said, “I’m going to ask you one question, and you can blink if speaking hurts.”

Elena stared at her.

“Did someone push you?”

Elena’s eyes filled.

Grant had told her no one would believe her.

That she was unstable.

That she had taken pills.

That she had fallen before.

That everyone knew she was fragile.

But Dr. Cole’s question did not sound like doubt.

It sounded like a door.

Elena blinked once.

Then again.

Rachel’s face changed.

Not shocked.

Focused.

“Was it your husband?”

Elena tried to speak.

A broken sound came out.

Rachel leaned closer.

“You’re safe in this room.”

Elena almost laughed.

She was not safe anywhere Grant could enter.

Her mouth moved.

“Phone.”

Rachel looked around.

“Your phone?”

Elena’s fingers trembled against the bedsheet.

“Grant.”

That was all she managed.

Rachel understood enough.

The phone was missing.

Grant returned with it two hours later after Elena asked in front of a nurse.

He claimed he had “kept it safe.”

The screen had been wiped clean.

No recent calls.

No messages.

No voice memos.

No photos from that night.

Grant underestimated Elena in one crucial way.

He thought because she was kind, she was careless.

Elena had been recording him for six weeks.

May you like

Not because she planned a courtroom battle.

Because she needed proof she was not imagining the slow disappearance of herself.
