Chapter 10 - Because She Wanted Some

On the first anniversary of the dinner, Claire hosted eight women in the library that used to be the dining room.

Not a charity gala.

Not a formal event.

Just a quiet evening with survivors, attorneys, advocates, and one accountant named Henry who was allowed because he had typed through terror without flinching.

There was food in the kitchen.

Buffet style.

Everyone served themselves.

No silver dome.

No assigned seats.

Evelyn brought wine.

Claire served sparkling water in crystal glasses because she refused to let Gloria own crystal forever.

At the end of the evening, one younger woman stood near the shelf where the silver tray sat behind glass.

“Is that it?” she asked.

Claire nodded.

“The tray?”

“Yes.”

The woman looked at it.

“Does it make you sad?”

Claire thought about that.

“No.”

“Angry?”

“Sometimes.”

“Then why keep it?”

Claire looked around the library.

At the books.

The warm lamps.

The women talking softly.

The room remade.

“Because it reminds me that evidence can be prepared before courage feels ready.”

The woman looked at her.

Then nodded as if she needed that sentence.

Later, after everyone left, Claire turned off the lights one by one.

The house settled around her.

Quiet.

Hers.

At the doorway to the library, she paused.

For a moment, she could almost hear it again.

Daniel’s voice.

Dinner. Now.

Gloria’s wine glass.

Vanessa’s smirk.

The slap.

The knock.

Then the sound faded.

In its place came rain against the windows and the soft hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Claire touched her cheek.

No mark remained.

Then she touched the doorframe.

Solid.

Real.

She had once thought survival meant escaping the house.

Sometimes it does.

For her, survival meant making the house stop belonging to the people who used it against her.

She walked into the kitchen and poured herself coffee.

May you like

Not because anyone ordered her there.

Because she wanted some.
