Chapter 2 - Prepared

Daniel looked pleased when she entered.
That was the worst part.
Not the slap.
Not Gloria’s wine glass.
Not Vanessa’s smirk.
The pleasure.
The certainty.
He believed Claire could be struck, ordered into the kitchen, and return carrying dinner.
That belief had kept her married longer than love had.
Claire set the heavy silver tray firmly in front of Daniel.
The impact made the crystal glasses tremble.
Daniel’s mouth curved.
Gloria’s eyebrows lifted with cold approval.
Vanessa leaned forward, still smiling.
“Finally,” Daniel said. “You remembered your place.”
Claire placed one hand on the silver handle.
She looked at him.
Then at Gloria.
Then at Vanessa.
“No,” she said softly. “I remembered yours.”
She lifted the dome.
The photographs came first.
Daniel’s smile died instantly.
A glossy image of him kissing Vanessa in a hotel elevator lay across the top of the stack.
Beside it sat a bank record showing a transfer from Claire’s trust account to a shell company named Vantage Strategy Group.
Vanessa’s company.
Under that, a forged authorization bearing Claire’s copied signature.
Under that, security-camera stills of Gloria entering Claire’s locked office two weeks earlier with Daniel’s key.
The flash drive sat in the center like a black insect.
Gloria’s wine glass stopped halfway to her lips.
Vanessa stared at the hotel photograph.
The color drained slowly from her face.
Daniel did not move.
Not at first.
His eyes went from the evidence to Claire.
Then back down.
For the first time all evening, he looked at the tray as if it were something that could strike back.
A heavy knock hit the front door.
No one entered.
Daniel turned toward the unseen hallway.
His breathing changed.
Shallow.
Fast.
Gloria gripped Vanessa’s wrist beneath the table.
Claire remained perfectly still beside the open tray.
Another knock came.
Slower.
Deliberate.
Daniel’s eyes shifted from the evidence to Claire.
Now he understood.
She had not improvised.
She had planned the dinner before he ever raised his hand.
“Who is at my door?” he asked.
Claire looked at her wedding ring.
Still on her finger.
For now.
“People who believe paper faster than apologies.”
Daniel stood so abruptly his chair slammed back against the wall.
Vanessa flinched.
Gloria set the wine glass down with careful control, though her fingers shook against the stem.
“Claire,” Gloria said, her voice low. “Whatever you think this is, you are making a terrible mistake.”
Claire’s cheek throbbed.
She looked at the older woman.
“No. I made the mistake when I kept trying to be accepted by people who were robbing me between insults.”
Daniel stepped toward the tray.
Claire moved one inch.
Not enough to block him physically.
Enough to remind him the documents were no longer only in the room.
Daniel saw her phone in her hand.
His eyes narrowed.
“What did you send?”
Claire did not answer.
His anger came back because anger was the easiest costume for fear.
He reached for the flash drive.
Claire said, “Touch it, and the front door opens with you holding evidence you were told not to disturb.”
His hand stopped.
The knock came again.
This time Daniel shouted toward the hallway.
“Not now!”
A man’s voice answered from beyond the door, muffled but firm.
“Mr. Whitmore, open the door.”
Vanessa’s mouth parted.
“Daniel?”
He turned on her.
“Shut up.”
The command was automatic.
Too harsh.
Too familiar.
Vanessa’s eyes widened because she had always assumed the cruelty reserved for Claire proved she had been chosen.
Now she heard her own future inside two words.
Gloria noticed too.
Her lips pressed into a thin line.
Claire watched all of it.
The shift.
The tiny rearrangement of loyalty when danger entered the room.
That had been the point of the tray.
Not only to reveal the evidence.
To make them see one another without performance.
Daniel leaned toward Claire.
His voice dropped.
“You think you’re clever?”
Claire met his eyes.
“No.”
May you like
“Then what?”
“Prepared.”
