Chapter 4 - Note That

Daniel laughed once.
“This is trespassing.”
Evelyn held up a folder.
“Not according to the homeowner’s written authorization, trust documents, and security access log.”
Gloria stood slowly.
“This is a private dinner.”
Henry Shaw looked at the open tray.
“Apparently it’s also a document production.”
Vanessa made a small sound.
Almost a whimper.
Evelyn approached the dining table.
Her eyes moved to Claire’s cheek.
The red mark.
The swelling.
Then to Daniel’s hand.
Then the documents.
“Claire,” she said gently, “did he strike you tonight?”
Daniel exploded.
“Oh, come on.”
Adam took one step forward from the hallway.
Not touching.
Not threatening.
Just present.
Daniel stopped.
Claire touched her cheek.
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s face did not change.
“Do you want that documented?”
“Yes.”
Gloria snapped, “She fell into the table.”
Claire looked at her.
“You raised your glass.”
Gloria froze.
Evelyn turned to Henry.
“Note that.”
Henry opened his laptop.
The sound of keys began.
Soft.
Ordinary.
Devastating.
Daniel looked from person to person.
The room that had obeyed him twenty minutes earlier now contained a record he did not control.
That was when he truly panicked.
Not when he saw the affair photo.
Not when the knock sounded.
When Henry began typing.
“Stop writing,” Daniel said.
Henry did not stop.
Daniel stepped toward him.
Adam moved one inch.
Daniel stopped again.
Claire watched that too.
Another documented stop.
Another piece of proof that Daniel understood consequence perfectly.
He only pretended not to when Claire was alone.
Evelyn picked up one bank statement from the tray with gloved fingers.
“Daniel, I strongly advise you not to touch anything on this table.”
He stared at her.
“You advise me?”
“I do.”
“This is my marriage.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “This is potentially financial fraud, forgery, marital coercion, and assault. The marriage is just how you gained access.”
Vanessa lowered herself into a chair.
Her knees seemed to fail slowly.
Gloria looked at her with disgust.
“Sit up.”
Vanessa did not.
Daniel’s eyes moved to the hotel photograph again.
Then to the fraudulent invoices.
Then to the flash drive.
“What is on that drive?”
Claire answered.
“You know.”
“No, I don’t.”
“The kitchen camera.”
His face changed.
Gloria looked at him.
“What kitchen camera?”
Claire turned toward Gloria.
“The one Daniel installed to watch the staff and forgot I could access through the original security account.”
Daniel’s mouth tightened.
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel.”
Claire looked at her.
“Yes. It recorded you too.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Gloria’s hand pressed flat against the table.
“What exactly did it record?”
Claire stared at the older woman.
“You moving documents from my office into Daniel’s briefcase two nights after I refused to sign the Vantage expansion papers.”
Gloria’s face lost color.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“You were seen?”
Gloria hissed, “You said the cameras were off.”
There it was.
Not denial.
Blame.
Henry typed faster.
Evelyn’s eyebrows lifted slightly.
Claire felt no satisfaction exactly.
Only confirmation.
All those nights she had lain awake wondering whether she was paranoid.
All those mornings Daniel kissed her forehead and asked why she looked tired.
All those dinners Gloria corrected her posture while her own hand had been inside Claire’s office drawers.
May you like
Not paranoia.
Pattern.
