Chapter 2 - Silence Finally Belonged to Them

The nurse guided Rachel into a chair in the hallway while security stepped between her and the office.

“Are you having pain?” the nurse asked.

Rachel tried to answer.

No sound came out.

Her body was shaking too hard.

The baby shifted beneath her palm.

Small.

Sharp.

Alive.

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes,” she whispered. “I think so.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I’m her husband. I’m a cardiologist here. I can—”

The security officer held up one hand.

“Doctor Carter, stay where you are.”

Doctor Carter.

Not Daniel.

Not husband.

Not father.

A title being used to stop him instead of protect him.

Rachel looked at him then.

Really looked.

For months, she had believed exhaustion was making her suspicious.

Pregnancy, Daniel said.

Hormones, Olivia said.

Anxiety, their mother said.

Rachel had believed parts of it because believing betrayal from two people you love requires a violence of its own.

But now Olivia stood in Daniel’s office with lipstick slightly smudged and no badge, no appointment, no reason to be there except the one written across Daniel’s face.

Guilt.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Guilt.

The nurse crouched in front of Rachel.

“What happened?”

Rachel swallowed.

“My sister kicked at me.”

The nurse’s expression tightened.

“Your sister?”

Rachel nodded slowly.

“And he told me to calm down.”

Daniel flinched as if that, not the kick, had injured him.

Olivia spoke from inside the office.

“She’s exaggerating. I barely touched her.”

Rachel turned her head.

The hallway seemed longer now.

Colder.

“Barely,” she repeated.

Olivia’s mouth closed.

The security officer spoke into his radio.

“We need OB triage and supervisor response outside cardiology office three-two.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Don’t make this a hospital incident.”

Rachel laughed once.

It was small.

Broken.

Disbelieving.

“You made it one when you brought my sister into your office and let her attack me.”

He lowered his voice.

“Rachel, please.”

That word meant nothing now.

Please had once meant forgive me.

Then listen to me.

Then don’t embarrass me.

Now it meant help me hide this before my career notices.

The nurse placed a hand near Rachel’s shoulder without touching her.

“Ma’am, we’re taking you to be checked.”

Rachel nodded.

When she stood, her knees nearly gave.

The security officer moved closer.

Daniel reached out instinctively.

Rachel stepped away from him.

Not far.

Just enough.

It was the first boundary he had not expected her to keep.

Olivia watched from behind the desk, arms folded tightly now, face pale.

Rachel looked at her sister.

The person who had slept in her bed during storms when they were children.

The person Rachel had paid rent for after college.

The person she had asked to help pick baby names.

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“You knew we were trying for this baby for two years.”

Olivia’s eyes glistened, but not with remorse.

With panic.

“Rachel—”

“You came to the ultrasound.”

Olivia looked down.

“You cried.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Rachel’s breath shook.

“You both did.”

No one answered.

May you like

Good.

Silence could finally belong to them.
