Chapter 5 - Nobody Gets to Call You a Scandal

Olivia was charged with assault.
Her attorney called it “a defensive movement in a highly emotional confrontation.”
The prosecutor played the footage.
Rachel did not attend that hearing either.
She watched a copy later with Bianca.
Only once.
She saw herself enter the doorway, tired but hopeful, holding the lunch she made for Daniel because she still believed marriage could be fed back to life one small act at a time.
Then Olivia’s leg moved.
Rachel paused the video there.
The frame held.
Her sister’s face.
Cruel.
Focused.
Not startled.
Not defensive.
Chosen.
Rachel turned off the screen.
“I don’t need to see the rest.”
Olivia eventually accepted a plea that included probation, anger management, no contact, and restitution for medical costs. She sent Rachel a letter through their mother.
Rachel returned it unopened.
Her mother called that cruel.
Rachel answered one text.
Cruel was kicking at my daughter before she was born. Boundaries are what came after.
Then she blocked the number for two months.
The baby came early.
Not dangerously early.
But early enough that Rachel thought her body had simply grown tired of carrying fear.
Labor began at 2:00 a.m. during a thunderstorm.
Bianca was not there.
Daniel was not there.
Olivia was not there.
Rachel’s best friend, Maya, drove her to the hospital while Rachel breathed through contractions and gripped the dashboard.
“Do you want me to call him?” Maya asked.
Rachel shook her head.
“Call the attorney after the baby.”
Maya blinked.
“Only you would say that in labor.”
Rachel laughed.
Then cried.
Then laughed again because the laugh hurt less than the contraction.
Her daughter was born at sunrise.
Small.
Loud.
Furious.
Rachel named her Nora.
The first time Rachel held her, she counted fingers.
Toes.
May you like
Breaths.
Then whispered, “Nobody gets to call you a scandal.”
