Chapter 8 - What Spills Out Can Become Proof

And it was Rachel, years later, standing in her kitchen while Nora, now four, packed a peanut butter sandwich into a small paper bag for preschool.

Nora held it up proudly.

“Mommy, will it tear?”

Rachel smiled.

“No, baby.”

Nora looked serious.

“Promise?”

Rachel took the bag gently and folded the top twice.

“I promise.”

Then she kissed her daughter’s forehead and thought of the hospital floor, the camera, the nurse, the moment evidence entered before Daniel’s lie could become the story.

Some bags tear.
