Chapter 14 - She Had More Than One

Frank opened the envelope and removed a small spiral notebook.
The cover was bent.
The pages were filled with dates.
Coffee — bitter, slept 6 hours, Margaret called accountant.
Soup — metallic, forgot signature discussion.
Tea — dizzy, Margaret said I was agitated.
Claire stared.
The handwriting changed over the months.
Strong at first.
Then uneven.
Then steady again in later entries, as if Frank had learned to write before drinking anything she handed him.
Frank looked at Ethan.
“I started smelling everything after your mother told me what you said at Thanksgiving.”
Ethan swallowed.
“I didn’t know.”
“No,” Frank said. “That’s why it matters.”
He handed the notebook to Mara’s courier, who had arrived separately and was waiting at the doorway.
Then Frank removed another item from the envelope.
A photograph.
Old.
Printed.
It showed a small silver tablet grinder sitting on a workbench beside a mug of coffee.
Claire’s breath caught.
Same model.
Not the Thanksgiving grinder.
Another one.
Ben stood abruptly.
“Dad.”
Frank’s mouth tightened.
“She had more than one.”
Nurse Price looked toward the hallway.
“Mr. Sullivan, I need to tell them the rest.”
Frank closed his eyes.
“Tell them.”
The nurse faced Ben.
“Three weeks ago, Mrs. Sullivan asked us to adjust your father’s care notes to emphasize cognitive decline. She said the family was preparing legal guardianship review.”
Ben’s expression went blank.
“What guardianship review?”
Claire’s stomach turned.
Nurse Price continued.
“I refused without an updated evaluation. She became angry. Two days later, your father slipped me that notebook and asked me to keep a copy outside the room.”
Frank looked at Ben.
“She wanted control of what remains of the family trust before anyone questioned what happened to Claire.”
Ben looked as if something old inside him had finally snapped.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
A clean internal break.
“My mother poisoned the room for years,” he said.
Claire watched him.
Frank nodded.
“Yes.”
“Not just food.”
“No.”
“People.”
Frank closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Ethan stepped closer to the bed.
“Did you smell medicine too?”
Frank looked at him.
“I learned to.”
“Did anyone believe you?”
Frank’s mouth trembled.
“Not soon enough.”
Ethan looked at Ben.
Ben lowered his eyes.
May you like
That hurt.
It needed to.
