Chapter 15 - You Do Not Get to Be My Voice

Before anyone could speak again, voices rose in the hallway.

Margaret’s voice.

Sharp.

Familiar.

“You have no right to keep me from my husband’s room.”

Nurse Price moved to the door immediately.

Frank’s hands clenched around the blanket.

Claire saw fear cross his face.

A grown man.

Eighty-one.

Still afraid of the woman who had made his confusion useful.

Margaret entered before the nurse could block her fully.

She wore a pale cream coat, pearls, lipstick perfect, silver hair swept away from her face. Her eyes moved over the room in one sweep.

Ben.

Claire.

Ethan.

Tyler.

The envelope.

The notebook.

Frank.

Her expression did not change fast enough.

For half a second, everyone saw the calculation.

Then came the wounded-mother face.

“Benjamin,” she said softly. “I see she brought the children into this.”

Claire did not respond.

Ben stood between Margaret and Frank.

“No.”

Margaret stopped.

One word.

Same word he should have said years ago.

This time, he said it before damage could arrange itself.

Margaret’s mouth tightened.

“No what?”

“No to the performance.”

She looked at Frank.

“Frank, darling, you’re tired.”

Frank flinched.

Ben saw it.

His face hardened.

“He is not tired enough for you to speak for him.”

Margaret looked at Nurse Price.

“I want this woman removed from his care.”

Nurse Price folded her arms.

“That request will need to go through administration.”

“I am his wife.”

Frank’s voice came from the bed.

“Not my voice.”

Everyone turned.

Frank’s hand trembled, but his eyes stayed on Margaret.

“You were my wife. You do not get to be my voice.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“Frank.”

He shook his head.

“No. I tasted it too.”

The room went still.

Ethan’s eyes filled.

Tyler whispered, “Oh my God.”

Margaret looked at the boys.

Then at Claire.

“You coached him.”

Claire almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because Margaret only had one song.

“She coached a man in assisted living to keep a notebook for two years?” Ben asked quietly.

Margaret’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t understand what I did for this family.”

Frank answered before Ben could.

“You made us sick and called it care.”

That sentence took the air out of the room.

Margaret stepped toward the bed.

Ben blocked her instantly.

Not touching.

Just standing.

Decisive.

She looked up at him.

For the first time in his life, Ben did not look like her son asking permission to disagree.

He looked like Ethan’s father.

Claire’s husband.

Frank’s witness.

A man late to truth but no longer late today.

Margaret lowered her voice.

“If you do this, there is no family left.”

Ben looked at her.

“There wasn’t when safety required silence.”

Mara arrived with facility security three minutes later.

No police scene.

No shouting.

No handcuffs.

Just boundaries turning into procedure.

Margaret was escorted out after refusing twice to leave voluntarily.

She walked past Claire slowly.

“You always wanted to replace me.”

Claire met her eyes.

“No. I wanted you to stop hurting people.”

Margaret’s lips curved.

“Same thing, to women like you.”

Claire did not answer.

May you like

For once, Margaret’s words did not enter her body.

They fell on the floor and stayed there.
