Chapter 20 - Voices That No Longer Had to Whisper

On the first Thanksgiving after Ethan graduated college, Claire found him alone in the dining room before dinner.
He was holding Frank’s cedar piece.
The table was set with blue plates.
Real plates.
No fear in them anymore.
“You okay?” she asked.
Ethan nodded.
“Yeah.”
“You sure?”
He smiled.
“I’m checking the room.”
Claire leaned against the doorway.
“For what?”
He looked at the table.
“Not danger. Just… history.”
She understood.
Some rooms keep echoes even after they become safe.
Ethan placed the cedar piece near his plate.
“Grandpa Frank said witness.”
Claire’s eyes softened.
“He was right.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You were the first witness.”
“No,” she said. “You were.”
He shook his head.
“I smelled it. You moved.”
Claire crossed the room and touched his cheek.
“Then we saved each other.”
That answer satisfied him.
From the kitchen, Tyler yelled, “If the turkey smells like medicine, I’m suing everybody!”
Ben yelled back, “It smells like rosemary, you dramatic goblin!”
Claire and Ethan laughed together.
The sound moved through the dining room.
Past the table.
Past the old fear.
Past the place where a steak once became evidence.

Outside, November light faded gently across the windows.
Inside, the house filled with voices that no longer had to whisper to stay safe.
