Chapter 1 - Good… Nobody Move

Eleanor slapped Daniel’s wife so hard her shoulder hit the hallway wall.

The sound cracked through the upscale living room like a plate breaking.

Late-afternoon light poured through the tall windows. Lamps glowed softly beside clean modern furniture. Everything in the house looked calm, expensive, and carefully arranged.

Except the woman pressed against the wall with a split lip.

Except the three people standing around her like they had been waiting for this moment.

Eleanor stood inches from her in a burgundy dress and pearl necklace, blonde bob perfectly styled, face cold with satisfaction.

“You married him for his money,” she said.

The wife’s head had snapped sideways from the slap. Her cheek burned. Her shoulder throbbed from hitting the wall. She tasted blood on her lip, but she stayed upright.

Chloe, Daniel’s sister, stepped forward in a pink dress and spat at the floor near her feet.

Marcus lounged near the sofa in a green polo, laughing like the whole thing was entertainment.

“Daniel is overseas,” Marcus said. “Nobody’s coming.”

Chloe lifted a folder from the coffee table and waved it in front of her.

“Sign the papers and stop pretending this house is yours.”

The wife pressed one hand against the wall to steady herself.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket.

She did not look down yet.

Eleanor grabbed her chin roughly and forced her face forward.

“Tomorrow, you sign everything.”

The wife breathed hard.

Then slowly, strangely, she calmed.

Her eyes moved down for half a second when the phone vibrated again.

One message.

Daniel.

Almost home.

Her eyes lifted back to Eleanor, Chloe, and Marcus.

“You really should leave before he gets home.”

Marcus laughed louder.

Chloe rolled her eyes.

Eleanor’s grip tightened.

“Still pretending he’ll save you?”

Then the camera of the room seemed to turn toward the front door one beat before anyone else noticed.

The handle moved.

The door swung open hard.

Daniel stepped into the doorway in military uniform.

He stopped cold.

His eyes took in everything.

His wife against the wall.

Her red cheek.

The split lip.

The spit near her feet.

The papers in Chloe’s hand.

His mother standing too close.

Marcus frozen mid-laugh.

For one second, nobody breathed.

Then Daniel’s face went still in a way that was more frightening than shouting.

“Good,” he said. “Nobody move.”

His wife’s hand trembled against her cheek.

Pain shifted into stunned relief.

Eleanor’s raised confidence collapsed first.

Chloe went pale.

Marcus straightened from the sofa like he had suddenly remembered how doors worked.

Daniel stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

Slowly.

Quietly.

That was somehow worse.

He looked at his wife.

“Are you hurt?”

She tried to answer.

Only a breath came out.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

He looked at his mother.

“Who hit her?”

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“She became hysterical.”

May you like

Daniel’s eyes moved to the red mark on his wife’s face.

“Wrong answer.”
