Chapter 3 - They Recorded Themselves

He read them.

Then said one sentence that kept her steady for the next twelve days.

“Do not sign anything. I’m coming home early.”

She did not tell Eleanor.

She did not tell Chloe.

She did not tell Marcus.

She only waited.

And recorded.

Not everything.

Not private bedrooms.

Not conversations she could not legally preserve.

But in the living room, hallway, and entry, where they walked in uninvited and made threats in her own home, she kept her phone ready.

That afternoon, Eleanor arrived with Chloe and Marcus while the wife was folding laundry in the living room.

No warning.

No knock.

Eleanor used the spare key Daniel had forgotten to take back.

Chloe threw the folder onto the coffee table.

“Today,” she said.

The wife looked at the papers.

Another deed.

A notarized statement prepared without her knowledge.

A document claiming she voluntarily agreed to leave the home for “marital peace” until Daniel returned.

She pushed it back.

“No.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“You think you can live here for free while my son serves this country?”

“I pay the mortgage.”

“With his money.”

“With our money.”

Marcus laughed.

“You hear that? She really thinks she’s equal.”

The wife reached for her phone.

Chloe saw.

“Don’t.”

The wife froze.

Eleanor stepped close.

“You are not calling my son to cry again.”

“He’s my husband.”

“He was my son first.”

Then the slap came.

Now Daniel stood in the entryway, and all those words seemed to hang in the air with the dust.

He looked at Chloe.

“Put the folder down.”

Chloe did not move.

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“Now.”

She placed it on the coffee table.

Marcus tried to ease toward the hallway.

Daniel did not even look at him.

“I said nobody move.”

Marcus stopped.

Eleanor recovered enough to speak.

“Daniel, you have no idea what she has done to this family while you were gone.”

Daniel looked at his wife again.

Her split lip.

Her shaking hand.

The fear she was trying not to show.

Then he pulled his phone from his pocket.

“I know exactly what happened.”

Eleanor blinked.

Daniel tapped the screen.

His wife’s recorded audio filled the living room.

Eleanor’s voice:

Tomorrow, you sign everything.

Chloe’s voice:

Sign the papers and stop pretending this house is yours.

Marcus laughing:

Daniel is overseas. Nobody’s coming.

Then the slap.

The actual sound of it.

No one moved.

Daniel stopped the recording.

His mother’s face lost color.

May you like

“You recorded your own family?”

His wife whispered, “They recorded themselves.”
