Chapter 4 - Four Hundred and Eighty Thousand

Daniel walked to the coffee table and opened the folder.
His eyes moved over the documents.
Quitclaim deed.
Temporary occupancy waiver.
Financial misconduct statement.
A draft affidavit claiming his wife had become unstable during his deployment.
His hands went still.
“Who wrote this?”
Chloe folded her arms.
“We had an attorney look at it.”
Daniel turned the page.
“Marcus.”
Marcus tried to laugh.
“What?”
Daniel held up the document.
“This affidavit says my wife agreed to let your business use the house as emergency collateral.”
Marcus’s mouth opened.
Then closed.
The wife looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel read the line aloud.
“The property may be used to secure short-term family business obligations pending Daniel W. Hart’s return and review.”
The room changed.
Eleanor looked at Marcus like he had ruined the script.
Chloe whispered, “You said that part was separate.”
Daniel’s eyes snapped to her.
“So you knew.”
Chloe’s face tightened.
“She was never supposed to read that page.”
His wife let out a small sound.
Not a sob.
Something sharper.
For months, they had called her greedy.
Accused her of marrying for money.
Spat at her feet over a house they were trying to use to save Marcus.
Daniel looked at his brother.
“How much debt?”
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel took one step closer.
“How much?”
Eleanor answered instead.
“It is temporary.”
Daniel turned to her.
“How much?”
Her lips pressed together.
Chloe whispered, “Four hundred and eighty thousand.”
The wife gripped the wall.
Daniel closed his eyes for one second.
Then opened them.
“You tried to force my pregnant—”
He stopped himself.
The room went still.
His wife looked at him.
They had not told anyone yet.
Not Eleanor.
Not Chloe.
Not Marcus.
She was only nine weeks along.
Still afraid to say it out loud.
Still carrying the ultrasound photo in her bedside drawer like a secret prayer.
Daniel’s face changed when he realized what he had almost revealed.
Eleanor noticed.
So did Chloe.
Marcus frowned.
“What was that?”
Daniel’s wife pushed away from the wall.
“No.”
Her voice was hoarse.
But firm.
“You don’t get that information. Not after today.”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re pregnant?”
Daniel moved instantly between them.
“That question is over.”
Eleanor stared at him.
For the first time in his life, Daniel saw his mother not as difficult, not as controlling, not as dramatic.
Dangerous.
Not because she had slapped his wife once.
Because she had built a whole story where his wife deserved it.
He looked at the spare key on Eleanor’s ring.
“Give me the key.”
She recoiled.
“This is my son’s house.”
Daniel held out his hand.
“It is our house. Hers and mine. Key.”
Eleanor looked at him like he had struck her.
But she dropped the key into his palm.
Daniel turned to Chloe.
“Your key too.”
“I don’t have—”
“Chloe.”
She dug into her clutch and placed it on the table.
Marcus muttered, “This is insane.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No. Insane is laughing while my wife bleeds because you thought you could use my deployment as a deadline.”
His wife’s phone vibrated again.
This time she looked.
A message from the attorney Daniel had contacted from overseas.
I’m outside with the mobile notary and security officer. Ready when you are.
Daniel saw it too.
Eleanor saw their eyes shift.
“Who is here?”
Daniel walked to the door and opened it.
A middle-aged woman in a dark suit stood on the porch beside a uniformed private security officer and a mobile notary.
The attorney stepped inside calmly.
“I’m Rachel Porter,” she said. “I represent Daniel and his wife regarding property protection, unlawful access, and coercive transfer attempts.”
Marcus swore under his breath.
Chloe began crying immediately.
Not from remorse.
From math.
Rachel placed a clean folder on the entry table.
“First, no one is signing your documents. Second, the locks are being changed tonight. Third, every communication related to these transfer attempts is being preserved.”
Eleanor lifted her chin.
“You cannot keep a mother from her son.”
Rachel looked at the wife’s split lip.
“No. But a court can keep an abuser from entering a home.”
The word hit the room hard.
Abuser.
Eleanor’s mouth opened.
May you like
Daniel did not correct it.
That hurt her more than anything.
