Chapter 5 - THE JUDGE
The order stunned the courtroom.
Taylor remained under indictment.
Evelyn remained jailed.
Yet Judge Price claimed Ryan had “interfered with therapeutic treatment” by refusing Sloan access to Lily.
Natalie objected.
Price threatened contempt.
Ryan stood.
“My daughter was locked in a freezer.”
The judge answered, “And this court will determine by whom.”
The bailiff moved toward him.
Natalie pulled Ryan back.
Outside, she said, “We appeal immediately.”
“They’re going to take her.”
“Not tonight.”
Price’s written order contained a technical delay. Transfer required approval from a court-appointed evaluator.
That evaluator was scheduled to visit Ryan’s home the next morning.
Her name was Dr. Amelia Ross.
Ryan expected another Sloan.
Instead, Ross arrived alone and asked Lily what made her feel safe.
Lily showed her the open bedroom door, the emergency whistle Ryan gave her, and the picture she drew of the garage.
In the drawing, Evelyn stood beside the freezer.
Taylor stood near the house door.
A third person stood outside the open garage.
A woman in a red coat.
“Who is that?” Ross asked.
Lily said, “The judge lady.”
Ryan froze.
Judge Price had been at the house the night of the incident.
Police records did not mention her.
The garage camera had a blind area near the driveway.
Lily remembered Price speaking to Evelyn before Ryan arrived.
“She said Daddy would come when I called.”
Price helped stage the event.
Ross ended the evaluation and called Detective Cole.
Within hours, federal investigators entered the case.
Judge Price denied visiting the house.
Her phone location data proved otherwise.
She claimed she stopped by for a charitable meeting.
A witness saw her car leave minutes before Ryan arrived.
The appellate court suspended her order and removed her from the custody case.
Price resigned the next morning.
Then disappeared.
Her home was empty.
Her passport was gone.
Safe Harbor Families transferred forty-seven million dollars overseas before accounts were frozen.
Evelyn learned about Price’s escape from her lawyer.
She panicked.
For the first time, she asked to cooperate.
She told prosecutors Price selected families through probate records.
Vane manipulated custody cases.
Sloan created medical justifications.
Evelyn’s role was identifying emotional weaknesses and training caregivers to produce compliant children.
“What did Judge Price promise you?” Detective Cole asked.
“Control of Lily’s trust.”
“Why Lily?”
“Because Aaron found the foundation accounts.”
Ryan listened behind one-way glass.
Evelyn continued.
“Aaron was going to federal authorities.”
“Did you kill him?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Taylor.”
Ryan’s knees nearly gave way.
Evelyn claimed Taylor lured Aaron to the warehouse. She believed they were meeting to discuss the trust.
Price’s people started the fire.
Taylor escaped through a rear exit.
Aaron did not.
Taylor denied it.
Then investigators found a photograph on Aaron’s hard drive.

She wore the same silver bracelet Ryan gave her on their fifth anniversary.
The picture had no timestamp.
But the bracelet was clear.
Taylor requested another meeting.
This time Ryan agreed.
She entered the interview room in jail clothing, without makeup, looking smaller than he remembered.
“I didn’t know they would kill him,” she said.
“You left him there.”
“They told me the fire alarm would trigger.”
“You left him there.”
“I was scared.”
“So was Lily.”
Taylor looked down.
Ryan asked the only question that mattered.
“Did you put our daughter in the freezer?”
Taylor began to cry.
