Chapter 6 - THE FIRST TIME
Taylor’s confession changed everything.
She admitted placing Lily inside the freezer during the first trial.
Evelyn told her it would last thirty seconds.
Taylor closed the lid.
Lily screamed.
Taylor opened it after twenty-two seconds.
Evelyn recorded the reaction.
The purpose was to create a panic response associated with garages and enclosed spaces. Sloan would later diagnose trauma and blame Ryan.
The second trial lasted longer.
Evelyn performed it alone.
The third was the night Ryan arrived.
Taylor was supposed to call him after Lily became heavily sedated. Cameras would record Ryan discovering her unconscious. Evelyn planned to place Ryan’s fingerprints on the medication bottle and claim he brought it.
But Lily found Taylor’s phone first.
She called Ryan.
That destroyed the timing.
Taylor said she wanted to stop the plan after the first trial.
Then Price showed her the warehouse footage.
Taylor had led Aaron there.
If she withdrew, they would charge her with murder.
“So you let them keep hurting Lily,” Ryan said.
“I thought I could control it.”
“That is what your mother said.”
Taylor flinched.
Ryan left without forgiving her.
The prosecutor offered Taylor eighteen years in exchange for testimony against Price and the foundation network.
She accepted.
Evelyn received no such offer.
Her role spanned too many families.
Sloan attempted suicide in custody and survived. After recovery, he began cooperating.
He gave agents access to encrypted patient files.
They identified thirty-two children.
Seven elderly relatives.
Nine dead parents.
The network was national.
Price remained missing.
Then Lily received a birthday card.
No return address.
Inside was a drawing of a blue freezer.
Under it, one sentence:
DADDY CANNOT WATCH YOU FOREVER.
Ryan called Detective Cole.
The card contained no fingerprints.
Postal tracking led to a drop box used by a private courier.
The courier had been paid in cash by a woman wearing sunglasses.
Security footage showed the woman’s face for one second.
Judge Price.
She had not left the country.
She was nearby.
The message was not only a threat.
It was bait.
Price wanted Ryan afraid enough to move Lily.
If he changed locations, she could track the relocation process through someone inside law enforcement.
Cole created a false safe-house transfer.
Only six officials knew the address.
Within twelve hours, a car appeared outside.
Agents arrested the driver.
He was a deputy marshal assigned to witness protection.
Price’s network reached federal systems.
The driver refused to talk.
Then someone killed him in custody.
A poisoned meal.
Ryan stopped trusting every badge.
Natalie arranged private protection.
Dr. Ross continued Lily’s therapy.
Lily began sleeping in her own bed.
She stopped checking the refrigerator at night.
One afternoon she drew another picture.
This time, a woman in a red coat stood beside Aaron’s warehouse.
But the face was not Judge Price.
It was Evelyn.
Ryan showed the picture to Lily.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
“Grandma showed me a video. She said Uncle Aaron was bad.”
Evelyn had used footage of Aaron’s death to frighten Lily.
The video must still exist.
Agents searched her cloud accounts.
They found a deleted file.
Aaron was trapped inside the warehouse while flames spread.
Someone recorded from outside.
The camera moved.
For one frame, a reflection appeared in a car window.
Judge Price.
Beside her stood Evelyn.
Taylor had lured Aaron.
Price ordered the fire.
