Chapter 13 - I Never Fought Dustin

People were strangely disappointed by that.

Friends asked:

“So when did you finally take him down?”

I didn’t.

There was no secret rematch.

No parking-lot revenge.

No old Marine teaching the cocky fighter a cinematic lesson.

The lesson had already happened.

Dustin threw his best public insult at me.

Then his fist.

I remained standing.

And refused to give him the fight he needed to turn himself into a victim.

At my age, that felt more satisfying than putting him on the floor ever could have.

Because combat training was never supposed to produce a man desperate to demonstrate violence.

It was supposed to produce control when violence was available.

Fifteen years teaching Marines had taught me that.

My daughter’s boyfriend reminded me why the lesson mattered.
