Chapter 8 - Lauren Had More Evidence Than She Realized

The police investigation did not depend on the gym punch alone.

That mattered.

Real cases are rarely solved by one dramatic moment.

Lauren had photographs of old bruises she originally took because a friend told her:

“Keep them even if you never use them.”

There were text messages.

I’m sorry.

I lost control.

You know I’d never really hurt you.

Then later:

Don’t make me look like the bad guy.

One message from three weeks before the hospital said:

If you ever go to your dad with this, we’re done.

Another:

Your old man thinks he’s tough because he was military.

Then investigators obtained the neighbor’s statement from the night Lauren was injured.

She heard shouting.

A crash.

Lauren yelling:

“Get away from me.”

Then Lauren came outside holding her ribs.

The emergency-room documentation matched her account.

None of it guaranteed an instant conviction.

But it was evidence.

Real evidence.

And now the gym surveillance added another piece:

Dustin initiating violence against someone confronting him about Lauren.

The pattern became much harder to explain away.
