Chapter 3 - ARLINGTON
I ignored Mariana’s call. She called eleven more times. Rodrigo called twice. Then Maya arrived at my hotel with two laptops and the look she wore when ordinary legal trouble had become something else.
Dad’s trust had inspection rights over assets securing Meridian’s debt. In 2022, his accountants noticed three profitable medical-office buildings in Arlington disappear from one subsidiary’s reporting. They had not been sold. They had been transferred to Aster Health Properties.
Aster was partly controlled by Rodrigo Santillan. I felt physically cold.
Meridian had paid for renovations. Then the buildings were transferred at book value. Within eighteen months, Aster refinanced them at a dramatically higher valuation. The spread approached sixty-two million dollars.
A trust linked to Mariana received nearly five million in distributions. Did that prove she knowingly stole anything? No. Beneficial interest is not knowledge. Maya kept reminding me not to build a criminal story faster than records could support it.
Then Dad’s handwritten memo surfaced. He had met Mariana privately six weeks before he died.
Mariana claims Rodrigo structured Arlington. Says Gregory knows. Says she accepted trust interest to keep evidence. Possible whistleblower. Possible self-protection. Need corroboration.
My father knew my wife was involved in something and never told me. I threw the memo onto the bed.
“Everybody keeps deciding what I shouldn’t know.” Then Maya asked who cleared Dad’s home office after his death.
Mariana. She said I was too emotional to handle it. She packed his papers, disposed of old tax files, and moved digital drives. I thanked her at the time.
At 1:12 a.m., hotel security called. Mariana was downstairs asking for me.
I told them not to send her up. She texted one photograph: a USB drive.
Your father gave me this. Then: Rodrigo thinks I destroyed it.

Then: I didn’t. Finally: If you want to know why I kissed him where everyone could see, meet me somewhere he cannot follow.
That sentence changed the affair without erasing it. A public betrayal made no sense if Mariana and Rodrigo were trying to hide together, unless the kiss itself was meant to trigger something.
