Chapter 4 - THE KISS WAS REAL
We met in Maya’s office the next afternoon. Mariana arrived alone, without the gold dress or the confidence she wore in the lobby. I did not touch her.
She placed the USB drive on the table. “The kiss was real,” she said.
“How long?” “Four months.”
No strategic excuse. She had been sleeping with my best friend for four months.
Then she explained the public kiss. Rodrigo wanted our marriage broken before the Meridian debt conversion. Mariana had kept delaying. The conversion was easier if I was angry, separated, and unwilling to touch the company. Rodrigo believed public humiliation would force me to leave.
“Did you agree?” “Yes.”
There it was. She chose the humiliation.
Then the trustee documents. “Did you sign them?”
“Yes.” “Did you know my signature was forged?”
She cried before answering. “Yes.”
No clean victim. Then why preserve Dad’s USB?
Because she had been collecting evidence against Rodrigo and Gregory while also protecting herself. She discovered the Arlington transfers after the first building moved. Gregory told her Meridian needed off-balance-sheet flexibility. Rodrigo said everyone would be made whole later. Mariana accepted an interest in Aster through a trust and kept distributions.
That made her participant at minimum. Dad discovered the arrangement. He threatened to call default under Miller debt unless value was restored. Gregory panicked. Rodrigo proposed converting the debt after Dad died.
Dad died of severe coronary disease. No murder mystery. No poison. Natural death. That mattered because fear can invent crimes evidence does not support.
We played the USB. Dad’s voice filled the room.
“Does Ethan know you own Aster?” “No.”
“Does he know Rodrigo does?” “No.”
“Are you helping them remove my debt rights?” A long silence.
“Not yet.” Dad answered, “Not yet is not no.”
Then Mariana whispered, “If I help you expose them, my father loses everything.” Dad said, “If you help them forge Ethan’s consent, my son loses the right to choose.”
The recording ended with Dad telling her she had thirty days to decide whether she was my wife or Gregory’s fixer. He died twenty-one days later.
Mariana never made a clean choice. She became Rodrigo’s lover, Gregory’s fixer, and keeper of Dad’s evidence.
Then she revealed something urgent. Aster had wired thirty-one million dollars out of the United States that morning. The transfer carried Mariana’s electronic approval.

For the first time, I chose neither trust nor rage. I chose records.
