Chapter 6 - THE PAYMENT FROM MY OWN COMPANY

The three-million-dollar payment came from Miller Systems, my software company, to Santillan Advisory Partners. Invoice description: federal-market expansion strategy.

We had never hired Rodrigo for that. Then accounting pulled the approval chain. My credentials authorized the payment during a week I was in California visiting my father after surgery.

Could someone have used remote access? Yes.

Who had my password? Nobody officially.

Then I remembered. Mariana once helped me reset a locked executive account from home. She watched me enter the recovery code. I changed the password later, but our password manager was shared for household accounts and, stupidly, I had reused a variation.

That was on me. Not consent to theft.

A security mistake. Then the two-factor approval.

My phone should have received it. Records showed the second factor went to an alternate device added nine months earlier.

An iPad. Registered to our home network.

Mariana’s iPad. She closed her eyes when Maya showed her.

“I didn’t add it.” Could Rodrigo?

He had visited our house often. He had slept in our guest room after college reunions.

He had helped configure the home network once. The list of people who had ordinary access was exactly why the fraud looked ordinary.

Then Rodrigo’s consulting company sent two million of the three million onward to Aster. The rest funded a venture deal. Who benefited? Rodrigo.

Then Mariana found an email she had forgotten. Rodrigo to her: Miller Systems transfer covers the Arlington gap. Ethan won’t notice before year-end.

Mariana replied: Do not touch his company. Rodrigo: Too late.

She never told me. Why?

Because exposing the payment would expose Arlington. Again.

She protected one secret by allowing another to stand. Then she said she confronted Rodrigo privately.

He threatened to tell me about their first kiss. Wait. Their affair had begun later.

That message was dated eighteen months ago. So what first kiss?

Mariana looked at the floor. Their physical relationship started eighteen months ago, not four months ago.

The four-month answer had been another lie. “How long?”

She whispered, “On and off. Eighteen months.”

I left the room. Maya followed.

I stood in the hallway staring at nothing. There are betrayals so large they become strangely quiet.

Rodrigo had been sleeping with my wife while stealing from my company and using that theft to cover a property scheme. Mariana had remained with me, protected him, and then helped forge my trust documents.

Then another twist. The three-million payment had been reimbursed to Miller Systems six months later.

From Meridian Crest. Why repay stolen money?

The reimbursement was labeled vendor correction. My company did not ultimately lose the principal.

That did not erase unauthorized use. But it meant Rodrigo may have used us as temporary financing, then covered the hole.

Same pattern as Arlington. Borrow without permission. Repair later. Call it harmless if nobody notices.

Dad’s notes contained one sentence: Rodrigo thinks repayment converts theft into a loan. That was the philosophy holding the entire scheme together.

Then Gregory Vale finally agreed to be interviewed by the special committee. His first words: “Rodrigo learned that from Robert Miller.”

My dead father. Again.

Someone was about to use Dad’s past to excuse the present.
