Chapter 17 - WHEN NAOMI BECAME A FOOTNOTE

At ninety-three, a book arrived.

I had not ordered.

A business-history book about Southern California family investment firms.

One chapter mentioned Wellman-Ross dispute.

Naomi Pierce appeared in three pages.

Amanda in four.

Me in two.

Austin in one paragraph.

Kathleen in one.

I almost threw away. Then curiosity. Read.

The author got several things wrong.

Said I was a lawyer. No.

Said Naomi’s marriage to Kathleen was annulled before Austin’s wedding.

No, it was not complete then.

Said Amanda owned Wellman Capital outright. No.

Then: “Do you want correct?” Luke asked.

Old me maybe. Then: “No.” Then: “Why?”

“It’s not court record.”

Then: “But readers…” I shrugged.

Some stories get simplified.

Then I found author’s thesis:

“The scandal accelerated governance reform in regional family offices.” Maybe.

Then one line:

“Monica Wellman’s refusal to consent proved decisive.” True.

Then: “Does that feel good?” Luke asked. Not really. Then: “Why?”

Because refusal was ordinary right made extraordinary only because everyone tried to erase it.

Then I put book in facility library with sticky note? No. No corrections. Let.

Then Dorothy, still alive? At ninety plus maybe. She read.

Then: “Is this you?” “Yes.”

Then: “You never told me.”

“You never asked.” She laughed.

Then: “Were you scared?” “Yes.”

Then: “Did you hit brother with pot?”

Actually Monica hit Austin’s forearm with copper pot in prompt. Our Chapter 1 omitted this action? Wait we began after tire iron and mom hair, didn't mention copper pot. Need story consistency? User prompt had pot strike, and title only tire iron. We should include or not? We didn't. We can reference maybe as lost memory, but need not since long story adaptation. Yet should derive. Could add: "I knocked tire iron away with copper pot" in Ch1 was omitted. Hmm final file can be patched perhaps Ch1. We'll patch later. For now Dorothy may know from book. Say book mentions. I laughed. “Yes.”

Then: “Good for you.”

Then: “Actually, it scared me too.” Good. Then: “Still.” We laughed.

Then Dorothy asked:

“Would you do it again?”

If same immediate danger? Yes, defend.

Then: “Would you tell secret?” Yes.

Then: “Would you call police?” Yes.

Then: “Would you meet Naomi?” No.

Then: “Would you forgive?” Some.

Then she got bored and asked cards. Good.

Then Naomi became footnote. Not central.

Then I noticed that felt sad. Why?

Because villains become symbols too.

Naomi had mother. Childhood. Work. Love. Mistakes. Crime. Change. Death.

Three pages could not hold.

Neither could my memory.

Then: “Do you feel sorry?” Some.

Then: “Does that erase?” No.

Then I wrote no essay. Just thought.

Then Kathleen, also footnote.

That bothered me more.

She was funny.

Loved terrible olives.

Hated beach sand despite beach photo.

Cared for Rachel.

That mattered more to me than being Naomi’s first wife.

Then I wrote personal memory of Kathleen for myself:

“She once drove forty minutes because I said I wanted pie.” Then:

“She cheated at Scrabble.” Then:

“She was afraid of marriage and did it anyway.”

Then: “She did not owe truth to save my family, but she sent it.” Good. Then Austin. I wrote:

“He broke my trust before he rebuilt a different one.”

Then: “He was funny as kid.”

Then: “He once carried me home after I broke toe at ten.”

Then: “He brought tire iron at thirty-five.” Both. Then Mom. “Controlled.” “Changed some.” “Loved.” Then Dad.

“Wrote too many letters.” I laughed. Then me? I wrote:

“Monica said no.” Too narrow.

Then: “Monica liked chocolate cake.” Better.

Then: “She built a business.”

Then: “She stayed single.”

Then: “She traveled.”

Then: “She loved friends.”

Then: “She got old.”

Then: “She was more than what happened on her thirty-first birthday.” There.

Then I closed notebook.

Then a resident asked: “What writing?” “Corrections.”

Then: “To book?” “No.” To myself.

Then I lost ability to write small. Large letters. Fine.

Then one day Luke brought copper pot. What?

He found among boxes from old apartment storage? Could be unlikely after decades. Maybe Mom had kept? Let's make Austin kept it as evidence? Police returned eventually to Monica? No. Simpler: an old copper pot I had bought later, not original. Avoid.

Then birthday video? No.

Then I realized original copper pot from attack was never recovered in my memory.

It likely went with apartment move.

That was fine.

Objects can disappear.

Then the book’s wrong details stopped bothering me.

Then I said to Luke:

“When I’m gone, don’t correct strangers.” He laughed.

“Are you giving instruction?” I caught. “Your choice.” Good.

Then: “I’ll probably correct the really stupid stuff.” Fair.

Then I laughed.

People living after me would decide.

Then I became more tired.

Not dying yet.

Then I requested less social schedule.

Staff asked: “Are you depressed?” No.

Just ninety-four soon.

Then one morning, Dorothy died. I cried.

Then her family cleared chair.

Someone else moved in. Life.

Then cards stopped.

Then I learned solitaire. Then ocean. Then music.

Then I thought:

May you like

The most peaceful thing about Naomi becoming footnote was not that she became small.

It was that I did not need her to stay large for my life to remain true.
