Chapter 1 - the shove on the staircase

Warm late-afternoon light poured through the tall windows of the Maine coastal manor’s library wing, washing the cream walls and dark oak floors in gold. Claire Bennett stood near the top of the wide polished staircase, barefoot in a fitted cream dress, a small folder of estate papers clutched against her chest. She had gone upstairs to review the documents in private before Ethan got home.
She never got the chance.
Logan Reed stepped in close behind her. He was the taller of her two brothers, dark-haired, broad-shouldered, and already wearing the expression Claire had learned to fear whenever money and family property entered the same sentence. Ryan stood just beside him on the upper landing in his gray fitted shirt, watching without stepping in.
Logan’s voice was low, vicious, and final. “ONCE YOU’RE GONE, THIS HOUSE IS OURS.”
Claire started to turn.
Then Logan shoved her.
It was not a stumble. Not a brush. Not a heated movement that went wrong. It was one hard, direct, decisive shove between the shoulder blades. Claire lost her balance instantly. The folder slipped from her hand and skidded across the steps as she tumbled down the staircase in one terrible, continuous fall.
She landed hard near the newel post at the bottom, breathless and stunned, pain exploding through her side. Above her, Logan and Ryan remained clearly visible at the top landing.
Claire cried out the only name that mattered.
“ETHAN!”
A second later Ethan Bennett rushed in from the lower hallway, still in his U.S. military uniform, his face transforming the instant he saw his wife crumpled at the foot of the stairs. He sprinted straight to her, dropped to one knee, and slid one hand behind her shoulder as carefully as he could.
“Claire—”
Then he looked up.
He saw Logan and Ryan standing together above.
His expression turned cold with rage.
Ryan lifted his chin and said, “She slipped. Don’t be stupid.”
Ethan did not answer. He kept one hand protectively near Claire, rose halfway, and without taking his eyes off the two brothers, placed two fingers to his mouth and gave one sharp commanding whistle.
The sound cut through the atrium.
From the same lower hallway came the pounding rush of claws on wood.
Rex—Ethan’s black-and-tan working dog—charged into frame and flew up the staircase in one continuous motion. Logan and Ryan both panicked and stumbled backward at the top landing. Rex launched directly at Logan, clamping onto his forearm and sleeve area and forcing him backward.
Ryan recoiled in terror beside him.
Below, Ethan stood near Claire, every line of his body rigid with fury.
“TRY TOUCHING MY WIFE AGAIN.”
Claire remained conscious and stunned at the bottom of the stairs while Logan shouted in shock and Rex held him pinned at the upper landing.
And as the folder lay open halfway up the staircase, its papers fanned across the polished wood, Claire realized Logan had not shoved her in a burst of random anger.

He had shoved her because he was terrified of what those documents were about to prove.
