Chapter 12 - the brother who talked first
Ryan broke first.
Not emotionally. Strategically.
His attorney approached Andrew with a proposal: Ryan would provide testimony in the civil matter and limited cooperation in the criminal one in exchange for consideration regarding his lesser role in the physical assault. Andrew made no promises, and Claire refused to support anything that turned Ryan into a victim of Logan’s personality. But she agreed to hear what he was willing to say.
Ryan’s statement confirmed several things Claire already suspected. He had known about Logan’s debts. He had participated in unauthorized access to company systems. He had supported the draft plan to characterize Claire as unstable if enough “operational incidents” accumulated. And he had seen Logan becoming increasingly fixated on the folder after learning Andrew might move against them.
But Ryan added one detail Claire hadn’t known.
The night before the shove, Logan told him, “If she files tomorrow, it’s over.”
Ryan claimed he thought Logan meant a screaming confrontation. He said he followed Logan upstairs because he didn’t want them alone together. Claire found that almost insulting. Following someone to watch him intimidate your sister is not protective.
Still, Ryan’s account of the top landing mattered.
Claire refused to hand over the folder.
Logan stepped in behind her.
Ryan told him to “just take the papers.”
Claire started to turn.
Then Logan shoved her.
Ryan admitted he froze.
That word stayed in every summary afterward.
He froze.
Not because he was shocked by a stranger’s behavior. Because the thing he had been helping create finally crossed into open violence, and for one second he could not hide from what that made him part of.
Claire never forgave him for the silence on the landing.
But hearing the truth from his own mouth closed something in her mind. She no longer needed to waste energy wondering whether Ryan might secretly have tried to stop it. He didn’t. He watched. Then he lied.
That clarity cost him his remaining place in the estate structure, as it should have.
