Chapter 14 - I went back to the stairs

Physically, Claire healed. Emotionally, the staircase took longer.

For weeks she avoided looking up when passing through the lower hallway. The angle alone made her stomach tighten. She moved through the library wing like a guest in a house she theoretically owned but no longer fully trusted.

Naomi told her not to force anything symbolic before she was ready. So Claire didn’t.

She worked from a downstairs office. Let Ethan handle visitors. Walked with Rex on the coastal path when her head became too crowded. Slowly, the house stopped feeling like a crime scene and started feeling like a place that had been the site of a crime.

There is a difference.

One rainy afternoon in early November, Claire stood at the bottom of the staircase with Ethan nearby and decided, without announcement, to go up.

He looked at her. “Do you want me with you?”

“No,” she said. Then, after a beat: “Just stay where I can see you.”

He nodded.

Claire placed one bare foot on the first stair.

Then another.

At the sixth step, she stopped. Her body remembered the fall more vividly than her mind did—the loss of balance, the helplessness, the certainty of impact. She gripped the railing and breathed until the panic eased.

Ethan didn’t move. He didn’t call out. He let her have the staircase without making her perform recovery for anyone else.

At the top landing, Claire stood exactly where Logan had shoved her.

The polished wood had been repaired. The folder was long gone. Nothing visible remained of the moment itself.

And yet everything did.

She looked down at Ethan.

He gave her a small, steady look that said only: I’m here.

Claire turned and walked back down.

When she reached the bottom, she exhaled. “That was awful.”

Ethan smiled faintly. “You still did it.”

“Yes,” she said. “And I’m not doing it again today.”

That made him laugh.

It made her laugh too.

The moment wasn’t cinematic or triumphant. It was awkward, shaky, ordinary, and deeply important. She had not reclaimed the staircase in some grand symbolic burst. She had simply used it again.

Sometimes that is all healing asks of us at first.

Not victory.

May you like

Motion.
