Chapter 11 - Brielle Finally Apologized Without Being Ordered To

Almost two months after the cookie-jar incident, Brielle asked Toby to sit with her at the dining table.

Heather stayed nearby but did not script anything.

Brielle had drawn another picture.

This one showed the kitchen.

She placed it face down at first.

Then said:

“I’m sorry I threw the jar at you.”

Toby stared at her.

“It hurt.”

“I know.”

“You made a bump.”

“I know.”

He touched his forehead as if the vanished bruise were still there.

Brielle continued:

“I was mad at Mom and mad at you, but you didn’t deserve that.”

Toby asked:

“Do you hate me?”

Brielle shook her head.

“No.”

“Did you then?”

She thought carefully.

“I thought I did.”

Heather held her breath.

Brielle added:

“But I think I hated feeling like there wasn’t room for me.”

Toby didn’t fully understand that.

He was four.

So he asked:

“Can I have cookies again?”

Brielle laughed unexpectedly.

“Yes.”

That was enough for that day.
