Chapter 12 - Eleanor’s Apology Failed the First Time
Her first letter to Sarah said:
I am sorry you misunderstood what I meant on the yacht.
Sarah returned it.
No response.
Second letter:
I was trying to stop you from making the emergency worse.
Also inadequate.
Then James told his mother:
“If you need everyone to misunderstand you before you can apologize, you’re not apologizing.”
Months passed.
Third letter.
Different.
When Lucas fell, I was terrified. Instead of helping, I said something cruel because fear makes me reach for control. I said he was not worth risking your life. A child heard his grandmother describe his life like a calculation. There is no context that makes that acceptable.
Sarah kept reading.
I also knew about Victor’s hidden debt and the documents connected to the key. When Lucas opened his hand, part of my attention went to the secret instead of entirely to him. I am ashamed of that.
Specific.
Then:
You owe me no access to Lucas.
That mattered.
Sarah showed the letter to James.
Eventually, with Lucas’s therapist involved, they allowed a short meeting.
Eleanor did not hug him.
She waited.
Lucas asked:
“Would you say it again?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it was wrong.”
No speech about love.
No demand for forgiveness.
Lucas nodded.
Then moved to another subject:
“Do you still have the yacht?”
