Chapter 15 - The Key Went Back Into an Ordinary Drawer

Eight years after the accident, Lucas Reed was sixteen.

The yacht was older.

So was everyone else.

Victor rarely joined longer trips now.

Eleanor came occasionally.

Sarah no longer watched every railing with panic, though part of her still counted where Lucas stood whenever the boat changed speed.

That afternoon, Lucas was helping James clean out the owner-cabin desk before maintenance.

He opened a drawer.

“Mom?”

Sarah looked in.

He held up a small silver key.

Black floating tag.

New battery.

Tiny red indicator.

Her body reacted before her mind did.

Ocean.

Splash.

Victor’s hands around her arms.

Lucas opening his fist.

BEEP.

BEEP.

Then Lucas grinned.

“Relax. Different key.”

Sarah exhaled.

“What’s it for?”

James checked.

“Emergency tool cabinet.”

Lucas tossed it lightly once, then caught it.

Sarah glared.

“Do not.”

He laughed.

“Okay.”

James took the key and placed it back inside the drawer.

No hidden loan documents.

No unauthorized closing package.

No secret waiting behind it.

Victor’s old records locker had been converted years earlier into secure storage for vessel manuals and emergency equipment.

Boring.

Perfect.

Later, Lucas stood at the rail wearing a life jacket because the water was rough.

Sarah joined him.

He looked down.

“Do you remember jumping after me?”

“Yes.”

“I barely remember falling.”

“I remember enough for both of us.”

He smiled.

Then:

“Do you still hate Grandpa?”

Sarah considered.

“No.”

“Grandma?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“For a while.”

Lucas nodded as though that made sense.

Then he looked back at the cabin where Victor was sitting with James, arguing about baseball instead of company control.

Families do not always heal into what they were before.

Sometimes they become something more limited.

More careful.

More truthful.

That can be enough.

The yacht turned gently toward the coast.

Lucas stepped back from the railing without anyone telling him.

Sarah noticed.

Said nothing.

Inside the cabin, the silver key remained in its drawer.

May you like

Just a key.

And this time, nobody was afraid of what it might open.
