Chapter 13 - Sarah and Victor Repaired the Wrong Moment Differently
Victor never asked Sarah to apologize again for the slap.
She did anyway.
One year after the accident, they sat on the terrace at the family estate.
Sarah said:
“When I got free, I could have jumped immediately.”
Victor nodded.
“I turned around and hit you because I was furious.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry for the hit.”
Victor looked toward the water.
“I deserved your anger.”
“That’s not the same as deserving the slap.”
He smiled faintly.
“You’ve been talking to therapists.”
“Unfortunately.”
Then Victor apologized again.
Not for:
the debt.
For the deck.
“I should have released you sooner.”
“Yes.”
“I should have thrown flotation immediately.”
“Yes.”
“And when I saw the key in Lucas’s hand, I thought about myself.”
Sarah said nothing.
Victor continued.
“For maybe one second. Maybe two. I hate that those seconds existed.”
Sarah believed him.
Then:
“Do you forgive me?”
She thought.
“For that day? Enough to sit here.”
Victor nodded.
Fair.
Their relationship never became warm.
But honesty replaced performance.
