Chapter 14 - Xavier Did Not Need Us to Become a Family Again

Darwin and I never reconciled romantically.
Not once.
People expected:
tension.
Maybe:
the miracle son brings parents together.
No.
Xavier deserved better than becoming:
marital glue.
Darwin loved him quickly.
Xavier loved Darwin:
slowly.
That was healthy.
At first, Darwin was:
Darwin.
Then:
Dad Darwin.
Eventually:
Dad.
Not because anybody ordered:
it.
Children choose names based on:
relationship.
Phoebe became:
Phoebe.
She never tried to be:
Mom.
Another healthy distinction.
She and Darwin stayed married.
Not effortlessly.
The revelation about Margaret forced them into serious couples therapy because Phoebe realized Darwin’s family could become dangerous when he confused loyalty with:
obedience.
Darwin had to prove:
he learned.
When Margaret demanded access to Xavier, Darwin said:
“No.”
Not:
Sydney won’t allow.
That mattered.
He said:
“I am not comfortable with you meeting him yet.”
His boundary.
Months later, after significant accountability and only with therapist guidance, Margaret received:
a short supervised meeting.
Xavier knew her as:
Darwin’s mom.
No instant Grandma.
Margaret cried afterward.
That was not Xavier’s responsibility.
Over time, she earned:
limited contact.
Not centrality.
Charles had a somewhat easier relationship with Xavier because he took responsibility more quickly.
He said:
“I believed things about your mother I should have checked.”
No excuse.
Then kept:
distance
when requested.
My own relationship with Darwin became practical.
School schedules.
Pediatric appointments.
Soccer.
Dinosaur phase becoming:
sharks,
then:
space.
We fought sometimes.
Especially about:
holidays,
travel,
discipline.
But we learned one sentence neither of us had used well during marriage:
“Let me think about that.”
Not:
Mom says.
Not:
my lawyer says.
Not:
your family always.
Pause.
Think.
Then respond.

It was astonishing how much damage can be prevented by refusing to answer from the oldest wound in the room.
