Chapter 8 - Phoebe Married Into the Same Story I Had Been Removed From

Phoebe Morgan met Darwin three years after our divorce.

She worked in interior design.

Steady.

Practical.

Not interested in Hale family mythology at first.

Margaret changed that.

According to Phoebe later, Margaret told the story early.

Darwin had been married before.

Sad situation.

Sydney could not have children.

She became bitter.

Marriage collapsed.

Phoebe asked:

“Did they consider adoption?”

Margaret said:

“Sydney could not accept that she was the problem.”

Not true.

Darwin did not correct:

her.

That was his responsibility.

Why?

Because the story protected him too.

If Sydney was:

infertile,

difficult,

unwilling to adapt,

then Darwin had not abandoned a wife during uncertainty.

He had made:

a painful adult choice.

Cleaner.

Phoebe believed it.

Why wouldn’t she?

Darwin showed no evidence of:

lying.

Margaret adored her.

Phoebe and Darwin tried for children briefly after their wedding.

Then Phoebe was diagnosed with:

endometriosis.

Not infertility.

A condition that might affect fertility.

She expected Darwin to become:

afraid.

Instead he said:

“We’ll figure it out.”

Phoebe remembered that sentence later.

Because apparently six years earlier he had not been willing to say it to:

me.

Why the difference?

Age.

Regret.

Growth.

Or maybe losing one marriage taught him something he never admitted.

Phoebe began noticing that Margaret reacted too intensely to:

fertility conversations.

She would say:

“At least you’re treating it properly.”

Or:

“You’re not pretending nothing is wrong like Sydney.”

Phoebe eventually asked Darwin:

“What exactly was Sydney’s diagnosis?”

He answered:

“Premature ovarian failure.”

Wrong.

“Was she menopausal?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did she do IVF?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“What?”

“Testing.”

Silence.

Then:

“She was the one with the issue.”

That bothered Phoebe.

Not enough to investigate:

yet.

Then Margaret suffered a mild stroke.

She recovered well physically.

But she and Charles decided to move from their large Marin house into a condominium.

Phoebe helped:

sort files,

pack,

discard years of paperwork.

In a locked desk drawer she found:

a cream envelope.

Addressed:

Darwin Hale

Return address:

Sydney Bennett Hale

Dated:

six years earlier.

Opened.

Inside:

my letter.

Darwin, I am seven weeks pregnant. The pregnancy dates to the final weeks we were living together. Dr. Morris has confirmed a heartbeat. I am not asking you to come back to the marriage. I am telling you because this child is yours and you have a right to know. Please contact me or have your attorney contact Marianne Ellis.

Phoebe read it twice.

Then saw a sticky note attached in Margaret’s handwriting.

Do not send. He finally has a chance to move on.

That was how the story finally broke.

Not because technology discovered:

truth.

May you like

Because paper survived.
