Chapter 5 - The First Bruise Had a Reason

Eight months before the ambulance, Eli came home with a bruise around:
his upper arm.
I noticed while he changed shirts.
“What happened?”
“Grandpa.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“He grabbed me.”
“Why?”
“I tried to leave.”
“Leave where?”
“The garage.”
Richard had asked him to organize:
tools.
Eli wanted to go home.
Richard said:
finish first.
Eli tried to walk out.
Richard grabbed his arm.
I called my father.
“What happened?”
Richard laughed.
“He jerked away when I stopped him.”
“Did you leave that bruise?”
“He bruises if you look at him.”
“Dad.”
“What?”
“I didn’t hit him.”
There.
The standard.
Not hit.
Therefore:
acceptable.
I said:
“Don’t grab him that hard.”
Richard snapped:
“Then teach him to listen.”
I should have ended unsupervised visits.
Instead I reduced them for:
two weeks.
Then my work schedule changed.
Eli went back.
May you like
That was clue one.
