Chapter 1 - THE SLAP THAT STOPPED THE ROOM

The first thing Emily Whitaker heard was the heart monitor.

The second was her father’s voice.

“You keep your mouth shut.”

Robert Whitaker stood over her hospital bed with one hand locked around her injured wrist.

Emily barely had time to turn her head before his palm struck her face.

The slap cracked through the trauma room.

Her cheek burned.

Her head snapped sideways against the pillow.

The monitor erupted into a frantic alarm.

Dr. Marisol Grant moved before anyone else.

She crossed the room in two steps and shoved Robert away from the bed with both hands. He crashed backward into a rolling cart, sending steel trays and instruments clattering across the floor.

“Security!” Dr. Grant shouted. “Right now!”

Robert straightened, stunned that anyone had touched him.

“You have no idea what she’s done.”

Dr. Grant stepped between him and Emily.

“I know exactly what you just did.”

The security doors opened.

Hospital Security Officer Marcus Bell entered first. Detective Claire Nolan came behind him, her badge already visible.

Brittany Whitaker stood near the wall, shaking so hard her arms were wrapped around herself.

Helen Whitaker was beside her, pale and silent.

Brittany suddenly pointed toward Emily.

“She deserved it!”

Detective Nolan turned sharply.

The entire room froze.

Dr. Grant ignored Brittany.

She took Emily’s CT scans and slammed them onto the illuminated light board.

Bones glowed in black and white.

Old fractures.

Newer fractures.

Healed injuries at different stages.

A wrist broken years ago.

Two ribs that had mended badly.

A collarbone fracture.

A hairline skull fracture.

Damage no sixteen-year-old girl should have carried.

Dr. Grant’s voice lowered.

“These were not accidents.”

The automatic security doors locked with a metallic clunk.

Robert stepped backward.

Officer Bell blocked the exit.

Helen’s knees nearly gave out.

Emily slowly lifted the oxygen mask from her face.

Blood stained the corner of her lip.

Her hand trembled as she raised it.

She pointed directly at Robert.

“He always hit me first.”

Robert’s face emptied of color.

Then he lunged.

Detective Nolan stepped between them and drove him back.

“Do not move.”

Robert glared over her shoulder.

“You don’t know her.”

Nolan did not blink.

“I know what I just saw.”

Emily reached weakly toward the light board.

Robert followed her hand.

His eyes locked onto one scan.

Not the newest one.

An older image.

A fracture near the back of the skull.

He stared too long.

Dr. Grant noticed.

“So you recognize that one?”

Robert’s breathing changed.

Helen made a small sound.

Emily looked from him to the scan.

That injury had happened when she was eight.

Her father said she fell down the basement stairs.

She remembered waking in the laundry room.

She remembered Brittany crying.

She remembered her mother wiping blood from the floor.

She did not remember falling.

Detective Nolan turned toward Helen.

“What happened when Emily was eight?”

Helen’s lips parted.

Robert cut in.

“She was clumsy.”

Emily watched her mother.

Helen looked at the scan.

Then at Robert.

“No,” she whispered.

Robert’s jaw tightened.

Helen began to shake.

“She didn’t fall.”

The words seemed to change the air.

Nolan stepped closer.

“Then what happened?”

Helen looked at Emily.

For the first time, Emily saw something in her mother’s face that was not fear.

Guilt.

“Brittany pushed her.”

Brittany gasped.

“That’s not true!”

Helen started crying.

“It was an accident.”

Emily stared at her sister.

Brittany stared back.

Robert moved toward Helen, but Officer Bell stopped him.

Nolan looked at the scan again.

“That explains one injury,” she said. “What explains the rest?”

No one answered.

Then Emily whispered, “There are more.”

Dr. Grant looked at her.

Emily pointed to her left side.

“Not on the scan.”

“What do you mean?”

Emily reached beneath the hospital blanket.

She pulled out a small silver key taped beneath the hem of her gown.

Robert saw it.

His face changed instantly.

He surged forward again.

“Give me that!”

Nolan twisted his arm behind his back and forced him against the wall.

Emily held the key tighter.

Helen stared.

“What does it open?”

May you like

Emily’s eyes filled.

“The room Dad told everyone didn’t exist.”
