Chapter 4 - THE CHILD WHO WAS STUDIED

Whitaker House had not only treated children.
It had studied them.
The recovered files described an off-books behavioral program called Attachment Correction.
The language was clinical.
The methods were not.
Children were isolated.
Affection was withheld.
Food was restricted.
Siblings were turned against one another.
Parents were instructed to reward obedience and punish emotional attachment.
Robert Whitaker was listed as program director.
Dr. Evelyn Hart was clinical lead.
Dr. Samuel Price supervised medication.
Brittany’s file began when she was seven.
Emily’s began before she turned three.
Emily stared at her own name on the first page.
“No.”
Nolan’s voice softened.
“You do not have to read this now.”
Emily pulled the file closer.
The notes described her as “Subject E.”
High sensitivity.
Strong maternal dependence.
Responsive to fear conditioning.
Repeated attachment seeking after punishment.
She stopped reading.
Dr. Grant sat beside her.
“What happened to me?”
Helen stood by the window.
Nolan answered carefully.
“Your father appears to have used techniques from the program at home.”
Emily looked at Helen.
“Did you know?”
Helen shook her head.
Then nodded.
Then covered her face.
“I knew pieces.”
“Which pieces?”
“He said he could make you stronger.”
“I was a toddler.”
“He said children learn early.”
Emily’s voice rose.
“And you let him?”
Helen turned.
“I tried to stop him.”
“When?”
“After Brittany got worse.”
“Not after I got hurt?”
Helen had no answer.
Nolan asked about Rachel.
Helen said Rachel had been brought into their home briefly because Robert believed Brittany formed an unusual bond with her.
Rachel was fifteen.
Brittany was seven.
Rachel protected her during sessions.
Robert considered the attachment a threat to the program.
“What happened?” Nolan asked.
“Rachel threatened to tell police.”
“And then?”
“Robert said she ran away.”
“But you did not believe him.”
Helen began shaking.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that night I saw him burn her backpack.”
The room went silent.
Emily watched her mother.
“You stayed.”
Helen’s voice broke.
“I had nowhere to go.”
“You had two daughters.”
“I know.”
“No. You keep saying that like knowing is the same as doing.”
Helen collapsed into the chair.
Nolan received a call.
Federal agents had located Dr. Evelyn Hart at a cabin near Mount Hood.
She was trying to destroy records.
She was arrested.
Dr. Samuel Price disappeared.
Robert remained in custody, but his attorney moved quickly.
By morning, he claimed Emily suffered from delusions caused by concussion and long-term sibling abuse.
He blamed Brittany for the injuries.
He blamed Helen for instability.
He claimed the basement room belonged to his late father.
The strategy was clear.
Divide the family.
Discredit the weakest witness.
Brittany returned to Emily’s room under supervision.
She looked exhausted.
“I am sorry.”
Emily did not respond.
Brittany sat.
“I remembered Rachel.”
“When?”
“Last year.”
“What did you remember?”
“She used to sing to me.”
Emily looked at her.
“Why did you say you caused my injuries?”
“Dad called me from the police station.”
Nolan stepped forward.
“How?”
“His attorney let him speak to me.”
“What did he say?”
“That if I did not confess, Mom would go to prison.”
Helen closed her eyes.
Brittany continued.
“He said Emily would be placed in state care.”
“I’m sixteen,” Emily said.
“He said you would never survive it.”
Emily almost laughed.
Robert had beaten her for years while pretending the world outside was more dangerous.
“What did he want you to find in the basement?” Nolan asked.
“A tape labeled E-16.”
Nolan checked the evidence list.
“There is no tape with that label.”
Brittany looked confused.
“It was there two weeks ago.”
“What was on it?”
“I don’t know. Dad watched it after he thought everyone was asleep.”
“How do you know?”
“I heard Emily screaming on the recording.”
Emily felt cold.
A memory surfaced.
Not an event.
A sound.
Her own voice as a child saying, “I’ll be good.”
Nolan’s phone rang again.
A forensic technician had recovered deleted footage from the hidden room’s security system.
The most recent clip showed Robert entering two nights earlier.
He removed one tape.
E-16.
He placed it inside a black briefcase.
Then another person entered.
Helen.
Emily looked at her mother.
Helen stared at the screen.
“I can explain.”
Robert handed her the briefcase.
Helen carried it out.
May you like
Nolan asked, “Where is it?”
Helen whispered, “I gave it to Dr. Price.”
