Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER BEHIND THE CAMERA

The E-16 tape had been recorded when Emily was six.

The recovered portion showed a small room at Whitaker House.

Emily sat alone beneath a bright light.

Her wrists were strapped to a chair.

Robert stood behind the camera.

Helen stood in front of her.

Emily cried.

Helen repeated the same sentence.

“Say Brittany hurt you.”

The child refused.

Robert’s voice came from behind the lens.

“Again.”

Helen slapped Emily.

The video froze.

Then Dr. Price returned to the frame with Brittany tied behind him.

“You see?” he said. “Families create their own monsters.”

The message ended.

Emily could not speak.

Nora stood beside the hospital bed.

Detective Nolan watched Emily carefully.

“This is evidence,” she said. “It is not the whole truth.”

Emily looked at her.

“My mother hit me.”

“Yes.”

“She made me blame Brittany.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We need to find out.”

Emily knew why.

Because Brittany was already labeled unstable.

Because Robert could hide violence inside a troubled child.

Because Helen helped.

Nolan traced the video upload to a closed motel near Baker City.

A tactical team found the room empty.

Blood on the chair belonged to Brittany.

She was still alive when the video was made.

Dr. Price called an hour later.

He wanted a deal.

Safe passage.

Money.

Immunity.

In exchange, he would release Brittany and provide the full archive.

The prosecutor stalled him.

Nolan built a location profile from the audio.

A train horn.

A ventilation fan.

A church bell.

They narrowed it to an abandoned residential center near the rail yard.

Emily remained at the hospital under guard.

She hated waiting.

At dusk, the raid began.

Price attempted to flee through a service tunnel.

Officers captured him.

Brittany was found alive in a locked treatment room.

The full E-16 tape was recovered.

It was worse than the clip.

But it was also different.

The recording showed Helen striking Emily once.

Then Helen turned toward Robert.

“I will not do this again.”

Robert laughed.

“You already did.”

He threatened to have Brittany institutionalized permanently.

He threatened to expose Helen’s role in Rachel’s disappearance.

Helen tried to release Emily.

Robert attacked her.

The rest of the tape became chaos.

Emily watched only part of it.

Then she stopped.

Helen had harmed her.

Helen had also been trapped.

Both were true.

Again, truth refused to become simple.

Brittany returned to Portland with cracked ribs and severe dehydration.

Emily visited her.

They sat in silence.

Finally Brittany said, “I wanted to destroy the tape.”

“Why?”

“Because Mom was in it.”

“You wanted to protect her.”

“I wanted to protect the version of her I still needed.”

Emily understood more than she wanted to.

Brittany looked at her.

“I did hurt you sometimes.”

“I know.”

“I hated you because Dad treated you like the better experiment.”

Emily stared.

“Better?”

“He said you still loved people after punishment. He said I became defective.”

Tears filled Emily’s eyes.

“He turned us against each other.”

Brittany nodded.

“But I helped.”

“So did I.”

“You were a child.”

“So were you.”

For the first time in years, they held hands.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But contact.

Dr. Price began cooperating.

He revealed that Rachel Moore survived the initial assault.

Robert and Evelyn moved her to a private property in Idaho.

Rachel escaped after eight months.

No one knew where she went.

Price believed she changed her name.

He also revealed that Claire Nolan’s older sister, Jennifer, had been treated at Whitaker House.

Nolan had never told Emily.

Emily confronted her.

“Is that why you care?”

Nolan did not deny it.

“Jennifer died by suicide when I was twenty.”

Emily’s anger softened.

“Was my father involved?”

“I believe the program destroyed her.”

“You knew about Whitaker House before tonight.”

“I have investigated it for six years.”

“Why didn’t you stop him?”

“Because every witness disappeared, recanted, or was declared unstable.”

Emily looked away.

Nolan continued.

“You are the first witness whose father showed the truth in front of police.”

The slap in the trauma room had become the mistake Robert could not buy away.

Then Dr. Grant entered with another scan.

This one was not Emily’s.

It belonged to Rachel Moore.

Recovered from the hidden archive.

The scan showed a surgical implant in Rachel’s spine.

A serial number.

The implant manufacturer traced it to a patient currently living in Boise.

Her name was Grace Miller.

She was forty-three.

And when police showed her Robert Whitaker’s photograph, she said, “That man buried Rachel Moore twelve years ago.”
