Chapter 1 - The Pearl Ethan Was Never Supposed to See

Lily Carter stood near the edge of the ballroom holding her small cream handbag against her chest.

Everything around her looked expensive enough to make the worn bag seem even older than it was.

Crystal chandeliers glowed above polished marble. Champagne glasses flashed beneath warm afternoon light. Ivory flowers towered over tables where donors, hotel executives, attorneys, and members of the Blake family spoke in low, comfortable voices.

Lily was ten.

She had been invited as one of the young recipients of the Blake Arts Foundation’s community music scholarships.

Her pale-blue dress was simple.

Her shoes were flat.

She had spent most of the afternoon trying not to touch anything.

Victoria Hale noticed the handbag.

Ethan Blake’s fiancée crossed the marble in a fitted silver-blue gown and looked down at Lily.

“What is that?”

Lily tightened her grip.

“My bag.”

“I can see that.”

Victoria’s mouth curved with contempt.

Then, without warning, she kicked it.

The toe of her heel struck the handbag hard enough to knock it from Lily’s hands.

It hit the marble.

The old clasp snapped open.

Several loose white pearls spilled across the floor.

Click.

Click.

Click-click-click.

Lily gasped and dropped immediately to her knees.

“No!”

She began gathering them with trembling fingers.

Victoria stood over her.

“Pick them up, you little charity case. You’ll never belong here.”

Tears filled Lily’s eyes.

She said nothing.

One pearl rolled beneath a champagne table.

Another stopped beside the edge of the cream carpet.

Three gathered near Lily’s knee.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Ethan entered.

He had been upstairs speaking with the hotel manager about a donor who arrived early. He expected music, photographs, and another hour of pretending he enjoyed engagement galas.

Instead he saw a child kneeling on the marble.

Pearls scattered around her.

Victoria standing above her.

He crossed the room quickly.

“What happened?”

Lily lowered her eyes.

Victoria answered first.

“She dropped her bag.”

Lily looked up sharply.

Ethan noticed.

He crouched beside the girl.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then he reached for the nearest pearl.

Something about it stopped him.

There was a tiny irregular mark beside the drill hole.

Not lettering anyone across the room could read.

Three microscopic cuts arranged like a small star.

Ethan rotated the pearl between his fingers.

His breathing stopped.

He knew that mark.

He had watched a jeweler make it when he was seventeen.

“Where did you get this?”

Lily looked at him through tears.

“My mom gave it to me.”

Ethan froze.

Behind him, Victoria’s expression changed.

Just for a second.

Then she lunged forward and slapped Ethan’s hand sideways.

The pearl flew across the marble.

“Throw that trash away!”

Ethan slowly turned.

Something inside him shifted from shock to fury.

Victoria stepped backward.

He rose.

Crossed the small distance between them.

And slapped her once across the cheek.

Victoria lost her balance and dropped onto the carpeted edge of the ballroom.

The room seemed to inhale.

Ethan did not touch her again.

He stared down at her.

Then looked back toward Lily.

“What is your mother’s name?”

Victoria’s face drained completely.

Lily answered softly.

“Sarah Carter.”

Ethan did not move.

His younger sister’s name had once been:

Sarah Blake.

May you like

And Ethan had not seen her in eleven years.
