Chapter 10 - Victoria Wanted to Become the Person Ethan Needed Most
Money was not Victoria’s central motive.
She had money.
Her event business had done well.
She owned her apartment.
Had investments.
The engagement to Ethan increased her social world, but she was not waiting to be rescued from poverty.
What she wanted was more complicated.
Usefulness.
Victoria grew up in a family where affection followed competence.
Her mother ran a luxury catering company.
If Victoria solved a problem, she was praised.
If she needed help, she was told:
“Figure it out.”
She became exceptional at making herself indispensable.
Ethan loved that about her.
He handed her chaotic problems.
She returned solutions.
Hotels.
Family office.
Events.
His father’s estate aftermath.
Foundation scheduling.
Even Christmas.
Then Sarah.
Sarah represented a problem Victoria could not solve without changing the shape of Ethan’s life.
If Ethan reconnected, he might need:
his sister.
Not Victoria.
If Sarah’s branch returned to active family administration, Victoria would no longer be the person explaining every old Blake structure.
If Lily became part of holidays, Ethan’s emotional center would expand.
None of that actually diminished Victoria’s legitimate place.
She experienced it as:
replacement.
Then engagement.
Ethan planned to marry her in four months.
Victoria should have felt secure.
Instead marriage increased her fear.
“What if Sarah comes back right after and everyone thinks I kept you away from her?”
Ethan asked:
“Did you think that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I did.”
There.
Once she hid the first email, every later disclosure became harder.
After the second:
worse.
After Lily:
catastrophic.
So she decided to get through the trust modification and wedding first.
Then perhaps tell Ethan.
When?
She did not know.
That is how concealment works.
The future becomes the moral dumping ground for truths inconvenient:
today.
Then the ballroom.
Victoria saw Lily.
Recognized Sarah’s old handbag.
Felt panic.
Then anger.
Why anger?
Because Sarah had entered again without asking.
Through her daughter.
At Victoria’s engagement gala.
That interpretation was irrational.
Still emotionally real.
She kicked the bag.
Then pearls.
