Victoria asked whether they could postpone instead of end.
Ethan considered it.
That surprised Sarah.
“You’re serious?”
“I loved her.”
“Past tense?”
“I don’t know.”
Good.
No clean emotional switch.
Then couples counseling.
Victoria admitted everything.
The emails.
Scholarship file.
Trust omission.
Handbag humiliation.
Panic.
She apologized to Lily in writing.
First version failed.
I am sorry I reacted badly because I was frightened by what your belongings represented.
Sarah refused to show it to Lily.
“What her belongings represented? She’s ten.”
Second version:
I kicked your handbag because I was angry and wanted to embarrass you. I called you a charity case because I believed my social position gave me the right to make you feel smaller. It did not.

When Ethan recognized the pearl, I knocked it away because I knew it could connect you to Sarah before I was ready for him to learn what I had hidden.

Lily read it months later.
Did not reply.
Then Ethan asked Victoria the question that ended their engagement.
“If Sarah had never reappeared, when would you have told me about her emails?”
Victoria cried.
“I don’t know.”
“After the trust modification?”
“Probably.”
“After the wedding?”
A long pause.
“Maybe.”
There.
Then Ethan understood.
This was not merely one panic.
Victoria had decided she was entitled to choose the timing of his relationship with his sister.
That was incompatible with marriage.
He ended the engagement.

The hotel deposits were divided according to contracts.
The engagement ring was Ethan’s grandmother’s.
Victoria returned it.
