Chapter 10 - Logan Had Helped Because He Thought Lucy Would Never Understand

Logan was twenty-five.

Old enough to know exactly what he was doing.

He eventually stopped pretending otherwise.

His explanation was not sophisticated.

He needed money.

His company was failing.

He had personal debt.

Cassandra offered him access to easy invoices.

At first, he told himself Rafael would never notice.

Then:

The trust had plenty.

Then:

Lucy was six and wouldn’t need the money for years.

Each rationalization made the next theft easier.

The jewelry was his idea.

He knew private buyers.

He assumed nobody had recently inventoried Natalie’s belongings.

He was right.

When Lucy caught him photographing the pieces, Logan laughed at her.

According to Lucy, he said:

“You don’t even know what these are worth.”

She answered:

“They’re Mommy’s.”

That sentence frightened him more than he expected.

Because value was exactly what Lucy understood.

Not dollars.

Ownership.

Memory.

Meaning.
