Chapter 11 - I Had to Answer for What I Did at the Pool Too

Cassandra pushed Lucy into the water.
Logan had helped steal from my daughter.
Those facts did not make every action I took afterward automatically right.
I punched Logan.
Then kicked Cassandra into the pool.
Lucy had already been rescued when I did both.
When police interviewed me, I did not call everything self-defense.
I said:
“I was furious.”
That was accurate.
Logan was standing there looking satisfied when I struck him.
Cassandra grabbed my arm before I kicked her, but I had already shaken her off.
The immediate contact had ended.
The kick was anger.
I accepted responsibility for my own conduct separately.
That mattered because someday Lucy would hear the full story.
I refused to teach her that love turns retaliation into virtue.
I protected her when I dove into the pool.
I protected her when I removed her from Cassandra.
The violence after that was something else.
Naming that distinction did not reduce Cassandra’s guilt.

It kept mine honest.
