Chapter 3 - Natalie Had Left Lucy More Than Jewelry
Natalie died two years earlier after an aggressive illness that gave us eight brutal months to prepare for something nobody could actually prepare for.
She knew she would not see Lucy grow up.
So she planned carefully.
Not dramatically.
Not with some secret fortune nobody knew existed.
She left Lucy three things of real importance.
Her personal jewelry.
A collection of letters to be opened at different ages.
And a trust funded by her life-insurance proceeds, investments she had owned before our marriage, and part of her inheritance from her parents.
The trust was substantial.
About $1.6 million when Natalie died.
It was not spending money.
It existed for Lucy’s education, medical needs, enrichment, and eventually a protected distribution in adulthood.
I was trustee.
That detail would haunt me.
Because I had been so focused on grief, parenting, and running my company that I gradually delegated household financial administration to Cassandra.
Not legal control.
Not trustee authority.
But paperwork.
Invoices.
Receipts.
Vendor files.
She would prepare reimbursement packages.
I would review and approve them.
At least I thought I reviewed them.
After Natalie died, hundreds of ordinary child-related expenses moved through my desk.
Therapy.
School.
Tutoring.
Travel.
House modifications.
Special programs.
I trusted the woman I planned to marry.
Cassandra learned that my weakness was not ignorance.
It was speed.
If a packet looked reasonable, I signed.
And Logan happened to own a small event-and-lifestyle services company.
At first, his involvement seemed harmless.
His company arranged transportation.
Tutors.
Private event staff.
Storage.
Household logistics.
Then gradually, invoices connected to Lucy’s trust began flowing through businesses linked to him.
At the time, I saw vendors.
Later, I would see a pipeline.
Natalie had tried to leave her daughter protected.
