Chapter 1 - Michael Came Through the Doors at the Worst Possible Moment

Emily Walker was already crying when Victoria raised the wooden switch.

She and her twelve-year-old brother, Ben, were crouched beside the marble kitchen island. Warm afternoon light filled the luxurious room, flashing across brushed brass fixtures and polished oak floors.

Victoria stood over them in a fitted burgundy dress.

The thin wooden strip came down fast.

The first strike landed across the thick cotton covering Emily’s upper back and shoulder.

“Ah!”

Emily curled forward.

Ben instantly moved closer to her.

Victoria did not stop.

She raised the switch and struck the same padded area a second time.

Emily recoiled against her brother, sobbing.

“Cry harder,” Victoria said. “Nobody’s coming to save you.”

Ben put himself partly between them.

He was terrified.

Still, he refused to move away from his sister.

Victoria lowered the switch casually beside her leg.

Emily looked toward the wide double doors at the far side of the kitchen.

“Dad…”

Victoria noticed.

A cold smile appeared.

“He’d choose me over two spoiled brats.”

Then the doors swung open.

Michael Walker stepped into the kitchen.

He stopped.

For half a second, nothing on his face moved.

He saw Emily crying on the floor.

Ben protecting her.

The raised wooden switch in Victoria’s hand.

Then Michael charged across the room.

Victoria heard him and turned.

Her arrogance disappeared immediately.

Michael caught her wrist, jerked her arm downward and forced her hand open.

The wooden switch clattered onto the floor.

Victoria gasped.

“Michael—”

He stepped in and slapped her once across the cheek.

Her head snapped sideways.

Michael stopped there.

No second strike.

No attempt to chase her.

He moved between Victoria and the children.

“What the hell did you do to my kids?” he shouted. “Your life here is over!”

Victoria stared at him with one hand against her cheek.

“They’re lying to you.”

Michael’s breathing was hard.

He looked behind himself.

“Emily?”

She was shaking.

Ben’s arm remained around her.

Michael crouched.

“Did she hit you anywhere else?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“Ben?”

“No.”

Michael looked at the switch again.

Then at Victoria.

“Why?”

Victoria’s mouth tightened.

“She stole something.”

Emily cried harder.

“I didn’t!”

“What?”

Victoria answered before Emily could.

“A file from my study.”

Ben looked at his father.

“It had our names in it.”

Michael stood slowly.

“What file?”

Victoria said, “Private household planning.”

Ben shook his head.

“It said I was dangerous.”

Michael stared.

“What?”

“And Emily was unstable.”

Victoria immediately said, “That is not what it said.”

Ben looked directly at her.

“I read it.”

Michael’s anger changed shape.

Less explosive.

More focused.

“Where is it?”

Ben hesitated.

“I hid it.”

“Bring it to me.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“No.”

Michael turned.

She stopped.

“That file contains confidential information you will misunderstand if you read it without context.”

Michael looked at his children.

Then back at the woman he had planned to marry in six weeks.

“My twelve-year-old son thinks you have a file calling him dangerous.”

“He’s twisting language.”

“And my daughter was just hit with a switch because you thought she took it.”

Victoria said nothing.

Michael’s voice dropped.

“Get your things.”

“You don’t know what I’ve been dealing with when you’re gone.”

“No.”

He looked toward Ben.

“That seems to be the problem.”

Ben stood carefully and helped Emily to her feet.

The girl remained physically unharmed.

Still terrified.

Then Ben said something Michael would remember for years.

“She keeps saying she needs proof.”

Michael frowned.

“Proof of what?”

Ben looked toward Victoria.

“That we’re the reason this family doesn’t work.”

Victoria went pale.

The switch lay between them on the kitchen floor.

And Michael realized the afternoon had not begun when Victoria raised her hand.

It had begun months earlier, inside a file he had never known existed.
