Chapter 5 - The Wedding Was Canceled Before Anyone Learned Why

We did not return to the ceremony.

There was nothing to return to.

By three-thirty, hotel staff were quietly taking down parts of the reception setup.

Guests received a short announcement:

The ceremony will not proceed due to a private family matter.

No explanation.

No accusation.

No public humiliation.

Julian wanted to tell people I had suffered a panic attack.

I refused.

“I’m not carrying your lie for you.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“The wedding is canceled.”

“They’ll ask why.”

“That’s not my problem today.”

He sat in a chair across from the bed with his head in his hands.

The bouquet remained crushed beside him.

Finally he whispered:

“I’ve destroyed everything.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He raised his head.

“You made choices.”

That distinction mattered.

“Everything” sounds like weather.

Like catastrophe simply happened around him.

Choices have authors.

Julian had authorship.

So did I.

My choice was not to marry him while I didn’t trust him.

His choice had been to treat my no as negotiable.

And his choice in that room had been to use the bouquet against me because humiliation felt unbearable.

Neither decision disappeared because he was crying afterward.

Before leaving the hotel, I photographed the redness along my cheek and shoulder.

Not because I knew whether I would report it.

Because my attorney told me:

“Document first. Decide later.”

That became useful advice far beyond the bruise.
