Chapter 15 - MY MOTHER AND EVAN

Evan Mercer was eventually arrested when he traveled through Panama.

Not dramatic.

Passport alert.

Routine.

He fought extradition.

Lost.

Then cooperated partly.

He admitted hating my father.

Thomas had exposed him to Susan.

The family cut Evan off.

He blamed Thomas for losing money, status, access.

After Thomas died, Evan approached Richard Hale.

They reused the old relationship.

Mercer Advisory became their conduit.

Why my father’s identity?

Cruelty.

And convenience.

If exposed, they could suggest Thomas had secretly continued participating.

Dead men cannot testify.

Then Evan said he knew I was Thomas’s daughter when Grant began dating me.

He told Celeste.

Celeste saw opportunity.

Did Grant start dating me because of it?

Evan said no.

That mattered.

Our first year may have been real.

The corruption entered later.

That truth was harder than believing everything had been fake.

If everything is fake, grief is simpler.

But something good can become corrupted.

That is more painful.

My mother listened to Evan’s testimony.

She cried.

Then apologized to me.

“For what?”

“For hiding your father’s settlement.”

I said:

“I understand why.”

“That doesn’t make it right.”

Good.

Accountability without self-destruction.

We learned together.

Families can survive truth better than secrecy tells you.

Not always easily.

Still.

Truth gave us a relationship more adult than the one built on protecting me from complexity.

Evan’s records also resolved one remaining mystery.

The $650,000 sent to BRK Holdings had not gone to me.

It funded an old political influence network designed to delay environmental enforcement.

That meant the apparent Brooks connection was camouflage twice over.

First my father’s identity.

Then an entity name close enough to my own company to create confusion later.

Layers of deniability.

Designed before Grant ever slapped me.

The assault was personal.

The machinery around it was institutional.

That distinction became important.

One could not excuse the other.

One also could not fully explain the other.
