Chapter 8 - GRANT’S COUNTERATTACK

Grant did not stay passive.

He sued me.

Claimed breach of engagement agreement.

Defamation.

Misappropriation of confidential business records.

Tortious interference with Hale financing.

The engagement agreement?

A document I had signed months earlier for wedding vendors.

Buried language included confidentiality around family financial matters.

Maya called it overbroad.

Still.

Litigation creates cost.

That was the point.

Then anonymous stories appeared online.

BRIDE ABANDONS WEDDING AFTER SECRET BUSINESS DISPUTE.

EMMA BROOKS TARGETS HALE FAMILY FORTUNE.

My company clients started asking questions.

One delayed a contract.

Another withdrew.

Grant knew where to apply pressure.

Reputation.

Business.

Cash flow.

Then a photo leaked.

My bruised cheek.

From the bridal suite.

Someone had taken it from my private cloud folder.

How?

Forensics traced login to an old shared iPad.

Grant still had access.

Digital invasion.

Again.

He used the photo perversely.

His PR team claimed:

“Minor redness inconsistent with allegations of violent assault.”

I laughed when Maya read it.

Not because funny.

Because someone had turned my face into a measurement problem.

Did it look hurt enough?

Victims always get audited emotionally.

Then Grant went further.

He claimed I struck him first with the folder.

Video from the suite?

There was hallway footage.

No interior camera.

But Maya had entered seconds later and saw my cheek.

The shattered perfume bottle.

The documents.

Timing mattered.

Then the hotel found something unexpected.

A smart vanity sensor recorded impact events for maintenance monitoring.

Not video.

Timestamped vibration.

One heavy impact at 3:42.

Another at 3:44.

Matched the folder slam and my body hitting the vanity.

Technology accidentally became witness.

Grant’s story weakened.

Then Daniel found an email that destroyed his claim the paperwork was routine.

Grant to Richard:

If she refuses, I may need to scare her into understanding what’s at stake.

My hands went cold.

Scare her.

Before the wedding.

Preplanned coercion.

The slap no longer looked spontaneous.

It looked like escalation inside a prepared strategy.
