Chapter 6 - MY MOTHER’S SECRET

My mother cried before I finished the question.

That told me enough.

We met at her house.

No Grant.

No cameras.

Just Maya, me, and Mom.

“Who is Evan Mercer?”

She closed her eyes.

“My brother.”

I had never met him.

Because I had been told he died before I was born.

He had not.

He disappeared from the family after a fraud case in the 1990s.

Changed states.

Changed names socially.

Not legally.

Mom said:

“Your father hated him.”

“Why?”

“Because Evan did business with people like the Hales.”

People like.

Not specifically?

Then she admitted:

“Richard Hale.”

My uncle had worked as an intermediary for Richard.

Political favors.

Permitting.

Union negotiations.

Things that lived near legal lines.

Sometimes crossed them.

My father found out during the Dallas project.

That was the real reason he fought Hale Capital.

Not only safety.

Corruption.

He threatened to expose payments.

Richard settled with him.

Part of the settlement required silence.

My father accepted money.

Then regretted it.

“How much?”

“Two million.”

I stared.

“Where did it go?”

“He donated most anonymously.”

“Why never tell me?”

“Because he was ashamed.”

Another family using silence to protect image.

Different scale.

Same instinct.

Then:

“Did Grant know?”

Mom shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Did Celeste?”

“Yes.”

My body went cold.

Celeste knew exactly who I was.

Then Maya asked:

“Why would Mercer Advisory be formed under Thomas’s identity?”

Mom whispered:

“Revenge.”

Evan hated my father.

After Thomas died, someone using Evan’s network created a company in Thomas’s name to move dirty funds.

Make it look like the dead whistleblower had secretly remained involved.

Discredit him if exposed.

That was the theory.

Then Maya asked:

“Why is Grant trying to gain Emma’s company?”

Mom looked at me.

“Because Brookstone owns the old project site.”

I froze.

“What?”

My company had acquired a portfolio two years earlier.

One industrial parcel outside Dallas.

I never connected it.

The old logistics site.

The land my father fought over.

And beneath it?

Environmental liabilities.

Unreported.

Potentially enormous.

Grant did not only need my company as collateral.

He needed control over the company that owned evidence of his family’s old misconduct.

The wedding contract had two purposes.

May you like

Finance.

And silence.
