Chapter 11 - Claire Had to Decide What to Do With the Wedding Dress

The dress stayed in a garment bag for almost a year.

Claire could not throw it away.

Could not wear it.

Could not look at it.

Her therapist told her not to turn the decision into a test.

No symbolic burning required.

No dramatic reclamation required.

Then one Saturday, Claire opened the bag.

The champagne fabric still had a faint repaired area near the shoulder where the strap had torn it.

Claire touched the stitching.

Nothing happened.

That surprised:

her.

She expected panic.

Instead she felt irritated that the dress had taken up closet space for eleven months.

So she donated it to a nonprofit that altered formalwear for women who could not afford wedding dresses.

The organization asked whether she wanted to include the story.

“No.”

Good.

Another woman did not need to wear Claire’s trauma.

She needed:

a dress.

Then Claire returned to the mansion for the first time.

Not the wedding hall.

A preservation committee meeting about another building on the property.

She almost refused the project.

Then decided not to let Ryan own geography.

She entered through a side door.

The hardwood looked the same.

No leather strap.

No wedding flowers.

Just contractors and architectural drawings.

Ordinary.

Then she noticed the front drive.

A black SUV was parked outside.

Her body reacted for half a second.

Then Charles stepped out carrying coffee.

Claire laughed.

“What?”

“You have terrible taste in cars.”

“That is slander.”

The SUV had become:

a vehicle.

Not prophecy.

Not salvation.

That mattered.

Then Charles asked whether she wanted him at the meeting.

Claire said:

“No.”

He left.

That mattered more.

Once, his presence meant control.

Then rescue.

Now it could simply mean:

May you like

optional.
